Hopefully we all know about NIMS (the incident command system ordained by the Homeland Security Dept). My dept and several other area depts have been very good about using standardized things for at least as long as I've been here. Our apparatus have the same riding assignments for each seat, the same tools, riders need to have certain training, we all use the same terminology (although not all the same as NIMS), and we're pretty good at setting up other sectors as needed on larger incidents. I really don't see us changing too much. How has it/will it affect your fire/ems/police dept?

Personally I think the rural vollie depts are going to get hurt by NIMS. With more and more training being required and encouraged, there may be a lot of people who don't show up after seeing what is involved in getting and staying certified for all the different stuff (CPR, First Aid, Air Pack, FF1, NIMS, etc). Pennsylvania is already experiencing a shortage in staffing in most areas. I can't see this and other mandates sure to follow as helpful to the situation.
