View Full Version : Accuracy Of Maks
Does anybody know what type of accuracy to expect from maks? 15 to 25 yards?
Also does anybody know where to find a mak in MN.

I don't have a lot of experience with my Mak; I've only shot 50 rounds though it, but I was able to shoot a couple of 1" groups with it at 10 yards, shooting with a two handed grip. (Fiocchi 95 gr FMJ) Not much to go on I know, and maybe it was a fluke, but I was pleased.

They are pretty damn accurate actually, just about as accurate as anything else. Their biggest drawback in this regard is the sights.
Here's a Mak you can order online and have shipped to your FFL.

From a bench rest I can consistantly hit a pie plate at 25 yards with my Maks. That is nothing to be sneezed at from a compact pistol. The Maks eerie accuracy is mainly due to them having a fixed barrel. Regards, Richard :D

I thought the board would be interested in my shooting experience from Monday afternoon.
I put 50 rounds through two of my EG Maks. I wanted to see if my eyes prefered plain Novak or A/O sights. I used FEG ammo and as I expected I experienced no jams. All rounds ejected cleanly and both pistols group well. I am near-sighted and wear bifocals but my eyes clearly prefer the plain Novak sights. It is just easier for me to see the Novaks and therefore I shoot better with them.
Regards,
Richard :)
GoreLicks thanks for the link but the reason i wanted one in Minneosta is i didnt want to go through all that FFL mumbo jumbo.

my east german is VERY accurate. it's a real pleasure to shoot and readily gets down on the target for multiple shots.

I sure can't brag about my shooting, 'cause I'm one of the worst pistol shots around, but I was able to shoot this 5 shotgroup at 10 yards with my Bulgarian Mak. Fiocchi 95 gr, FMJ ammo. (I also just figured out how to post pictures here, so I'm still playing with that at bit.) The target was printed from Makarov.com, on standard printer paper.

Now I need to figure out how to make 'em smaller. The pictures and the groups.

With the barual mine is pretty good. But with the 115gr Wolf I can't hit squat at 25 yards.

I generally only load 5 rounds at a time. Just a "quirk" of mine. Five is one row out of the cartridge box, and it keeps things neat. I'm not claiming all my groups looked that that by any stretch, but most of them were in the < 2" range. That particular one I really took my time, lined the sights up right.
I took it back to the range today, and ran another 100 rounds through it. Wolf, 95 gr., FMJ. Some of those 5 shot groups were just one ragged hole. Out of the 150 rounds I've shot through it, I have had zero (0) malfunctions.

I shot mine from a bench rest (Mak shoots better than I do) at about 15 yards and the holes were within 1 inch.
I believe there is a gunshow Aug. 20 + 21st at Rivercentre in St. Paul I believe. Might have some luck picking one up in person around there. Otherwise you could watch the sale boards here or gunboards.com for something.

Even the undersized 9mm will stay on target and not keyhole.

Did you just say you fired 9X19 in your Mak? I would have to check but I don't think that's possible.

Never say impossible.;)
It was part of a torture test on the Makarov I did a while back. It may still be on GT.
Found it. The pictures won't show until next month, my account ran out for this month. Check back, the pictures are worth seeing.

The 9x19 is too long for the Mak magazine but can be chambered by hand and fired one round at a time.
From time to time the question comes up about 9x19 in the Mak, so I tried it and you see the results.
I AM NOT IN ANY WAY SUGGESTING ANYONE FIRE 9x19 IN THEIR MAKAROVS.
I did a controlled experiment leading up to finally shooting standard full load 9mm ammo.
The 9mm (.355 dia.) is not very accurate.
.357 dia. bullets were pretty accurate.

Gore,
Who is the importer of the Maks from JG Sales?
Regards
with surplus East German ball ammo my 1961 Simson Suhl holds groups as tight as my Glock 19 at 15 yds!
It's not just about accuracy though. Everything I've read says that in most crisis situations it come down to point and shoot. At this point, accuracy takes a back seat to dependability and Makarovs are famous for being dependable (as long as you test fired your carry ammunition long before you actually need it).
My room mate has the Ruskie with adj sights-they're not really any better than the fixed IMO,but I can get sub 4" groups @ 25yrds offhand without much trouble-IOW,it strikes me as being about as accurate as any typical service pistol.
I just bought a bulgy Mak today.;a
My bulgie falls to fourth behind my G30, P9 and CZ-75B. At 15 yards I can usually get a 3-4 inch group. Problem is that it tends shoot a little high and to the right. I'm sure its just the sights.
