View Full Version : Need recommendations on Wireless Networking
I am going to set up a wireless network between my desktop and laptop. Looking for a wireless router and a wireless pc card for the laptop. Been looking at the Linksys Wireless-G Network Kit for Notebooks WKPC54G. Has everything I need for around a $100. Anybody use this, or want to recommend something better/cheaper?
I recommend getting at least 802.11G.
Here are a few suggestions:
I do have the 802.11g belkin wirles router. It was working fine a few days ago. As far as I know it is still OK. I do have the connection encrypted so I may try to reset the settings and see what happens.
Just wanted to let everybody know that I highly recommend this setup:
D-Link DWL-923 Wireless Router & kit
Just got mine. Bought mine on ebay for $39.99, was very easy to install and set up, and it works great. A+ for D-Link.
My parents have a D-link 624 in their (large) house. The antenna is in the basement on one end of the house and it works all the way to the other end of the house on the second floor.
I have had bad luck with linksys routers and I won't ever buy them again. I was so fed up with my first linksys router that I converted one of my older computers into a linux router.
BTW, wireless is great right now. It used to be terrible and not go very far, but they are able to go very far these days. The manufacturers keep insisting that speed is the biggest factor, some even claiming 108mbps! I think range and quality is far more important. Especially since most peoples internet connection is somewhere around 3-6mbps.
Whatever you decide, make sure both the router and the client card support WPA-PSK, one of the better security standards for wireless. Most equipment made within the last couple years support this feature. Oh, and make sure to use it too. You wouldn't believe how many people out there are willing to let me use their internet for free.
