We could cuss and discuss M1s, M14s, HK 91s, G3s, FALs, and the like (even 98 Mausers and '03 Springfields), without the bother of wading through threads about poodle-shooters and carbines, that often show up (inappropriately, IMNSHO), in the High Power forum.

Our SDM's (squad designated marksman) have the option of taking them out. Our 1114 HMMV's arent very accomodating of all that extra rifle, most of the time an ACOG on an m-4 are all they need.
So yes they're over here, and i see them often enough to be pleasantly recognized.

10-23-2005, 11:05
I can't believe all the negative responses I have seen in the NG thread. I am somewhat disheartened. I post alot at a few sites. GT felt better than most. It appears too many forums at GT is too much. If the people don't want a MBR forum, why would they worry about it if they don't view it?

Gary

David N.
10-23-2005, 18:01
GNG inhabitants tend to oppose everything. You see the comments urging consolidation of forums? Start a thread trying to combine some forums, and you'd get just as many people opposed to that. Possibly even some of the same ones that suggested it.

By the way, richard 'at oughta learn ya to ask for support in gng. ;)

thetoastmaster
10-24-2005, 09:41
I think some of the problems with the GNG thread was richard's references to ARs and AKs. There are already forums for ARs and AKs. We want a place to discuss full grown rifles, FALs and M14Ses, as an example.

I realize I can always go to M14forums or FALfiles, but I like the folks at GT (even you, GL ;) ), and would like to have a little corner of GT for that kind of discussion, with people that I already know (as much as you can know anyone online) without having to switch websites. I also understand that there is a milsurp clubhouse. There isn't much discussion of SLRs there, outside of the Garand. It seems to be a place for C&R, mostly (FALs and HK91s certainly do not qualify).

So let anyone rail against a subforum for MBRs that will. If we never get the requisite votes, we'll just start our MBR threads over in the "Black Rifles" clubhouse ;) .

You did good, Richard. Some folks you just can't reach.

I'll bet if the vote was for an FAL forum, they'd understand where we were coming form (it's not "black rifle", nor "Mil surplus")

[That was a joke, son, a joke. I really don't want a dedicated FAL forum, because we need to compare all of the MBRs side by side]

Exactly. FALs, HK91s and their variants don't fit in the milsurp forum, so topics about them get scattered throughout the high power, non-glock firearms, and even black rifles forums.

So let anyone rail against a subforum for MBRs that will. If we never get the requisite votes, we'll just start our MBR threads over in the "Black Rifles" clubhouse ;) .

I remember when someone tried that. Once. Didn't exactly receive a warm welcome, IIRC. I can just imagine what a full scale invasion would do to a couple of guys. ~okie~

Well, I think I misunderstood what your intent was for a battle rifle forum. As a veteran, my idea of a battle rifle is one proven in combat and, therefore, historical and nostalgic to own and shoot. But after all the crap I got about the 5.56 NOT being a battle round, I guess I have been out-witted ;Q

One guy even called the 16 a "skirmish rifle" rather than a battle rifle. Mmmmk, over 58,044 lost in Nam, and it was a skirmish, eh?

If I want to ask about a grease gun or a Bren or a Sten, I want a place to do it. Milsurp is specifically American Milsurp.

But tell me, please: what is the Internet definition (accepted understanding of) what constitutes a true "battle rife?" I asked in GNG, but of course it went unanswered, because it's easier to be an ass and then leave then it is to help further another's understanding who didn't get the chance to have their hand held and had to learn all this stuff on their own.

What makes a battle rifle a battle rifle?

10mm4ever
10-24-2005, 11:50
Generally the definition of an MBR is any rifle that was adopted by a country, that chambers a full fledged rifle round. An assault rifle,is defined by the fact that it chambers an intermediate rifle caliber such as 7.92x33Kurz,7.62x39 soviet,5.56NATO,etc.Just as a sub is defined by being a selective fire weapon chambering a pistol caliber.;c

I don't believe you have to actually own an MBR to support the forum. It's enough to actually know what they are, and want to discuss them.

The SOCOM is an interesting critter, like DSA's FAL carbine. They shoot full grown rifle rounds, but have short barrels. I guess we could call them fifth generation battle rifles. We'll have to discuss real life performance from these (accuracy and bullet velocity as prime considerations) when we get the board going.
