View Full Version : new hammer for 10/22
i'm looking at picking up a new hammer for my 10/22. i have a couple questions about it though. the one i'm looking at is the Volquartsen Custom Target Hammer. it says that it drops the trigger pull to between 1.75 and 2.25lbs. my questions are:
1) does anyone have one of these and if so, does it really do what it says?
2) there is also a hammer and sear package. what's a sear and would i be better off getting both instead of just the hammer?
3) it says that there is gunsmithing required. how hard would it be for me to replace this myself?
thanks for the help.
I'll trade ya a new hammer for a 10/22.
Seriously, this is a good question and I would like to know the answer to it, too.
I would have to say that there are more than enough reasons to get rid of that stock Ruger trigger. I do my own triggers, but I know some folks that swear by those Volquartson hammers.
I'd guess that the gunsmithing would be in relieving that sear notch enough so that it will catch the hammer 100% of the time, without putting a bunch of creep into the trigger.
Yes, these AM parts work as advertised, and are worth their weight in gold. Better yet, though, buy one set, and if you have two 10/22's, make the other gun's factory internals look just like the ones from Big V and you'll save some money!

Yep the Volquartsen hammer and sear do get the trigger right down there. Its crisp and clean break. Definately worth the $. Take a look at their Exact edge extractor, bolt bumper and auto bolt release too. I feel these are must have's also. To me the hammer and sear is the best mod for the 10/22.

The Volquartsen hammer will get you a pretty good trigger pull for not much money. The sear helps a little bit more. You shouldn't have any trouble making the installation in 15 minutes, the 10/22 trigger group is very easy to work with.

It's worth it! My Volquartsen hammer was $35 (ontarget.com) I think and it dropped the triger down to about 2 pounds. MUCH lighter and smoother than the factory trigger! Installation took about 15 minutes, no gunsmith required. I imagine a new sear would make the trigger even smoother, but I'm happy with just the hammer.

Also look at the Clark Custom Deluxe Trigger Kit, it contains hammer/sear, new springs and a New Trigger with Over Travel Stop Installed. Cost at Brownells with the dealer discount is $60 US.
I have one in my Home Built and the Trigger Pull is about 2.5#
So does the Volquartsen hammer come with directions.
Is is that easy to drop in?
Help me see it here before I buy one please.

The Volquartsen hammer is extremely easy to install. I don't believe that it comes with instructions, but once you remove the trigger group from the action you will see that it is pretty simple. I'd post instructions, but I'm away from home (& my 10/22) so I can't give a step by step. Here's a link to OnTarget (they are a great vendor of 10/22 stuff.)

Glockbill:
Could you please post those instructions when you have a chance?
I'd really appreciate that.
Thanks.
