View Full Version : PM9 Range Report with WWB 147gr JHP
This is the third range report on my recently replaced PM9. Everytime I take it out, it gets better and better. Today it went through 120 rounds flawlessly. It has gotten well over 600 rounds through it now. Since everyone seems to be on the 147gr. JHP kick around here, I figured heck if I am going to listen to these know it alls and switch over to 147 gr. JHP's I better make sure it is accurate enough to do the job. I knew the little guy would digest them, I just wasnt sure what to expect in the accuracy department. I was worried about POA, even though I know it is something one is not supposed to fret about in a CCW weapon. Its just I have missed some big stuff(bears & coyotes) with my S&W 442 and I feel it important that the gun I choose to save my *** be able to hit the intended target. This test was pretty unscientific, but then, more and more the gun rag authors are doing the same thing. Also, going the route of the gun rag authors I will cheat and count the best three of the five shot group, because according to them it is indicative of a machine rested gun. The black is a 4" circle so you can see this gun and the WWB 147gr JHP is plenty accurate, well for me anyways. To spare you all the tedium, I will just put up the two targets that had the least rain & mud damage. I did 3 groupings of rapid fire to get an idea of how well I could handle the load. I then did 3 groupings of controlled slow fire to try to get the most accuracy from a standing position. Going by best 3 of 5 bullets fired the average between 3 targets was under 2.5" in controlled slow fire. I am sure that had it not been raining I could have gotten 1 hole groups;) What you see is indicative of the 3 groupings I shot for the two different shooting methods. Please excuse the poor low res quality, and bad lighting. Once I find my chrono, I will do a velocity test as well.
Attached 1 pic of 3

Mud flaked off this one easily today. This was one of the best controlled Standing Slow Fire groups I got. Please excuse the shotgun pellet holes.
These are velocities I got yesterday for the WWB 147gr JHP. I will also post velocities from a G26.
PM9 G26
723fps 785fps
755fps 782fps
729fps 802fps
What are your opinions on this? Foot pounds seem minimal, I have no idea how this effects expansion on the WWB 147gr JHP. I was hoping high 800's. I am interested in any info on Federal 124gr +P EJHP.

Whoa! Much less than what I would have expected.
Velocity 5" from barrel shouldn't be dramatically different than muzzle velocity, and the difference in fps between the PM9 and the G26 seem correct--only .36" barrel length difference between the two. Still I can't help but wonder if the chrono reading for both of them is accurate. fastforty chrono'd the WWB 147gr out of the PM9 with an average fps of 877...although he chrono'd FMJ rather than JHP Consider that the muzzle velocity for most 147gr 9MMs out of a 4" barrel is around 950 fps...I would expect the G26 to clock in around +900 fps. So, the results above don't ring true to me.
Here's a link to fastforty's chrono results:

sounds like 38 special velocities out of a 4in barral

Yeah, I was very disappointed, but I think I will try to get a second opion using a range Chrono and not my old Chrony F1.
I would not think that Winchester would use different powders in the FMJ vs. JHP.
I really hope these speeds are erroneous as it would be cool to practice for $10 for a box of 50 versus $20 for the other 147 gr. JHP offerings.
I will keep you updated.
