View Full Version : Kahr k9 info, it will be here monday! yea!
Ok, so my kahr K9 elite 2003 model will be here monday. I have a bunch of questions. I was wondering what lube is good for it ( i live in northern utah, and it is dry, hot in the summer, and cold in the winter(really cold)) Also, kahr has some IWB holsters on their website. I am like 140 and 5'7" so i am not really that big. I mainly want this as a range piece, but also i will get my ccw soon just for ease of having one. Also, any other info you have would be great. I will post a range report after I get it to the range. Thanks

1st off ;F!!!
Well… I live in Mid-Michigan & it get hot & humid in the summer & just a hair cold (yeah, like -20*) in the winter up here. ;) I use Mobil-1 fully-synthetic motor oil for lube in my Kahrs… actually I use it on all of my guns. :) (Mobil-1 doesn’t burn off during use or evaporate while just sitting… it also doesn’t get gummy when cold.)
I personally like FIST kydex holsters.
I’m sure your going to LOVE that K9 Elite 2003! ^c
Thanks for the advice. THis is my first gun, so now that the day is finally near( i have been researching for years!)

Hey Michigun,
Something I have been wondering about.
I have the MK9 Elite 98.
That's the difference between it and the '03???
I like Tetra grease for large areas of metal-to-metal contact and Tetra oil for the rails. Tetra oil is a lot thicker than most gun oils, but more slippery than grease. Grease is great because it tends to stay put even when it heats up. Sure, it attracts more dirt and fouling, but it makes cleanup a lot easier. If this is your first Kahr, they like a lot more lube than you would put on a Glock.
One trick I've found is to use CLP for wiping up the powder residue and dirt, reserving solvents for the barrel and breech face. Over time, repeated application of CLP will work into the pores of the metal and produce a teflon-like finish. Solvents just strip that out.
As for a holster, I can't recommend the products made by Tucker Gunleather (http://tuckergunleather.com) enough. I use their Cover-Up IWB holster for my P9; it also works for the K9, PM9, MK9, etc. The nice thing about this holster is that its cant and height are adjustable so that you can find the perfect position and angle for your body.
Ok, so I know all of this will be in the manuel, but what items should i buy for cleaning? (Brushes, etc)

From what I understand this is the only difference:

In other words, external differences only between the Elite 98 & the Elite 03.
Ok, so I got som CLP break free to clean out the gun itself. Now what weight of mobil 1 synthetic do you recomend? I like the idea of using one lube, and I have heard good things about CLP , and useing motor oil(synthetic) before. Any more info would be appreciated. Oh, by the way IT CAME TODAY AND IT LOOKS GREAT!!!!! THE TRIGGER IS SWEET IN DRY FIRE (its ok to do this right?) I haven't had time to read all of the manuel yet(it came right before work, and i just got back) But wow, the fit and finish is excellent. Can believe I got sucha good deal;z
Oh yeah, the CLP says it is a cleaner and lubricant. Is it really ok to just use the CLP?

CLP = Clean Lube & Protect
CLP is a GREAT choice as it is a GREAT protectant. (This is the main reason ALL of my non-GLOCK's get treated with CLP!)
You may find that CLP isn't the best cleaner, but all that really means is that it may take ya a bit longer to cut through the really stubborn buildup... not a huge deal. (I use CLP to clean unless the gun is REALLY dirty... I rarely have to use anything but CLP however.)
CLP is marginal at best as a lube... it burns off quickly & doesn't take long to evaporate while sitting around. Sure CLP leaves behind a thin coat of Teflon when it evaporates, but I never found Teflon to be all that slick to start with, nor that lasting/robust. (This is where the Mobil-1 comes in for me.)

I've been using 5W30... works great.

It is safe to dry-fire the Kahr... you have to dry-fire the Kahr in order to field strip it. ^c (It certainly wouldn’t hurt to use a good “snap-cap” if you plan on dry-firing your gun 3 zillion times though. ;))
