I had a little time on my hands waiting for the water well folks.
Looks like my pump is going out, making metal. They were supposed to be here 12, it's 2:30 now.;Q

Anyhow it was a good time to set up the chronograph and check out some of the Makarov ammo I have on hand.

So for what it's worth here's what some of the common 9x18 loads are doing.

I fired 3 shots each. That gives a good average and if I get a weird reading, which I didn't today, I'll fire a couple more.
I'd shoot 5 or 6 but I hate to lose my re loadable brass in the grass.;f

Commercial ammo.

1. Hornady Custom 95gr XTP JHP---921 FPS

2. Sellier & Bellot 95gr FMJ---980 FPS

3. Silver Bear 120gr JHP---1000 FPS

4. Barnaul 95gr JHP---1000 FPS

5. Fiocchi 95gr FMJ---1015 FPS (bought in Jan 98)

6. Federal Hi-Shok 90gr JHP---981 FPS (looks like Speer GD bullet)

Reloads.

1. Light load. 95gr LRN, 3gr Bullseye---764 FPS (very accurate and functions with a 21 pound recoil spring)

2. Defense load. 90gr Speer GD JHP, 4.2 gr Accurate Arms #2---1094 FPS (powder charge is .3 less than the max shown in the Speer manual)

3. Experimental load. 110gr 38 (.357) JSP/HP---806 FPS (the powder charge was full for a 95gr .364 Mak bullet but there is blow by and a loss of velocity with the smaller diameter bullet, in a pinch light 38 bullets can be loaded for the Mak:) )
When I have time I'm going to bring this bullet up to 1000+ FPS and see how it preforms. It's pretty accurate as is.

BTW, all the loads were very accurate and as normal functioned without a hitch.

This is my chrono setup.
Mo, my delinquent cat was helping me align the equipment. He thought those cords were his.;f

He finally got here at 3:45.
Cost me two Kimbers to have the pump replaced, $1745.;Q

BTW, if anyone has any load they would like to have chronographed let me know. If I have it or can get it I'll check it out.

I have a couple more to test, like the Fiocchi JHP and Silver Bear 115gr JHP and I'll post the results.

No joke.
When I shoot I have to put him in the shop to keep him out of the way. The rest of the cats and dog will back off a good distance but not Mo, he'll go chase the bullet impacts.

He had to get in the picture when I was taking some gun pictures.
Sometimes He's a pain but I wouldn't trade Him for the world.;f

Thanks for doing the tests, posting M2. ^c

I'm wondering, have you or anybody else found a round that would NOT cycle reliably with a 21# spring?

Not me.

When I bought my first Wolf springs from makarov.com I got a 19 and 21 pound to try out.
I figured maybe my target loads will function with the 19 and so I might settle on the 19 for all around use.
Maybe I'd use the 21 for practice with "hot" loads.

I was surprised that my target loads would function 100% with the 21 and the brass doesn't fly into the next county.
So after using the 21 in a number of Maks, with most of the available commercial and my reloaded ammo, I swapped all my Maks over to the heavy spring and gave the 19 to a friend.

I still don't recommend using the 21 pound spring, in a defense Mak, until it's been given a good range testing.

Got to go do some chronographing, 45ACP.;f

I have two Maks; one happens to have a 21# recoil spring and the other has a 19# spring. They both function perfectly with all ammo from mild to hot.

Can you tell much difference between a 21# and 19#?

I'm using the 19# right now, might have to try out the 21 if it seems to work with most stuff. thanks
