May I ask exactly WHERE you were "in country?" or is that part of your "successful missions" that you can't talk about? Anyone else ever noticed how posers seem to be drawn to the "it's classified" line?

Now I'm not saying that you personally are a poser, it's just something that I've noticed among posers.

The reason I ask about where you were "in country" is that you had told Russ that you were...

Now that would mean you turned 18 years old in the same year that the Vietnam war ended (April, 1975). That's pretty impressive. I don't know of too many 18 year old SEALS who served in Vietnam. In fact my uncle, who was UDT in Korea, and a CPO in one of the first SEAL teams, doesn't remember any. But then he didn't tell me about all of that 30 year old "classified" stuff.

But then, you never said you were in VIETNAM. So I'm just curious as to where you were "in country" completing "26 successful missions." Please, feel free to answer.

BTW, I too can throw out a bucket full of Navel jargon and acronyms. That doesn't mean squat to me.

For some reason, I am doubtful. The entire thread is HERE. (http://www.glocktalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=402934&perpage=25&highlight=&pagenumber=5#newpost)

Tell you what, why don't you contact the guys over at veriseal.org (http://www.veriseal.org/). Since you're "one" of them, you KNOW what their status is right? You can share all of your 30 year old Double 00-Spy stories with them because they have the "clearance."

Tell them that I'm a doubting Marvin, and ask them to tell me that you ARE the real thing, and not some poser. That way, you can protect your 3 decades old OpSec, so the SecNav doesn't take you to a Captain's Mast and make you walk the plank.

Before becoming a Seal must be go thru UDT first and Seals started in 1965 not many in the Nam until 67, so when were you in. The Seals have a Website to check. If you truely were a Seal what class were you in and I will check and confirm it for you or not!
Whatever you were in the service you should be proud, Allvets that seen action are.

I guess the shame of being a liar isn't great enough to send him on his way... ;T

Who cares?

If he's a SEAL, great. If not, he obviously has issues of self-respect and self-confidence. Either way, I'll treat him the same way--with respect (until and unless I find out he doesn't deserve it). If he's not a SEAL and requires delusions of grandeur to get him through the day, who am I to deprive him?

I treat SEALs the same way I treat my fat Aunt Patty--as human beings.

If you think that's bad, check out my deal. I had to put up with "Hanoi" John Kerry in Cambodia Christmas of '68 (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A27211-2004Aug23.html) .

Sure, I was only 6 1/2 years old, but when President Nixon gives you secret orders to go... YOU GO! Of course I guess it would have helped if President Nixon had actually been President; since our country elects its Presidents during even years, but only inaugurates them in odd years. In this particular situation January of 1969. ;Q ;Q ;Q

;e ;e ;e

Some covert commandos are just more special than others I guess.

No one is suggesting we "deprive" him of his idiocy or cares he's a nitwit and suffers from delusions of grandeur and derives comfort from lying on the 'net pathetically.

But the fact it diminishes the sacrifices and extreme degree of hard work and dedication to defending this country made by a small, elite group of American men should raise the hackles of anyone who loves this country and respects the military and the Special Warfare community, whether you are/were/aren't a part of the fraternity.

During my time in the Navy I knew a few SEALs, and this subject came up a few times. The consensus seemed to be that if someone wanted to impress an acquaintence by claiming to be a SEAL, they didn't care as long as the person in question never represented himself as such to the real thing or used the claim to try to get some kind of special privilege or, God forbid, information. One guy even went so far as to laugh about it, saying, in essence, that it was just about the last thing in the world he was worried about. Overall I got the sense they almost assumed this kind of thing would go on and weren't were overly worried about it, again with the aforementioned exception.

Personally, I share the same view, and I've never known a SEAL who couldn't stand up for himself, but I do understand your point of view. I also apologize to any true members of the teams if they don't share the opinions outlined above. You guys are my heroes and deserve all the best.

I was stationed at the amphib base in Coronado in the barracks across from the chow hall and had to listen to your sorry butts sing like the mormom tabucular choir every morning. Y'all probably heard some encouraging phrases come from those barracks. :)

We coordinated things with the Beachjumpers and some other units I've forgotten. Does anyone remember D.J. Thomas from Hialea <sp?> Florida from the late 60's?

Ultimately I ended up working on river boats just off Song Ong Doc one the west side of the Delta. I know the SEAL teams kicked azz on the Delta and made a lot of other people's jobs easier.

Many of the Vietnam missions have been declassified; from experience SEALS tend to be tight lipped and usually don't go around bragging about stuff if I'm catching the drift of this thread correctly.

My dad was 101st WWII and when I returned home he didn't talk about his war and I didn't talk about VietNam. About five years ago I met a SEAL who really got messed up in Somalia - he didn't talk about Somalia and I didn't talk about Viet Nam. Where is all this leading?

What's interesting is that when Vietnam vets get together, we don't talk about the war - the ones who do talk about the war and brag are usually the ones who know the least or were never there.

Actually in a long winded way I just want to say thank you for all you did to accomplish your missions. I have total respect for the UDT and SEAL teams and what you earned, no one can take away - ever!:)

Adios,
Bob

That's been my experience also. My uncle rarely talks about his times in Korea or Vietnam. And almost never about anything he did over there.

Almost all of the stories I have heard came from my dad. He was with the USAF 509th FIS during Vietnam, and swapped a lot of war stories with his brother at the time. They were able to hook up on R&R a few times, and took every chance to get together that they could.

As my dad tells it, once my uncle got home he wouldn't talk about it anymore. There are some things that you can only share with people who have been there themselves...
