View Full Version : please help! springfield ILS stupidity!
I just bought my first 1911-A1, a Springfield Mil-Spec in the parkerized finish. I really like the fit and finish for such an inexpensive pistol. $480 NIB out the door with a freebie box of PMC to boot!
I have only shot a few rounds through it and decided to field strip it out of curiosity. What an experience after owning and shooting only Glocks for years! I had more parts on the table than the Glock has in total before I even got the slide off. I really appreciate the beauty of simplicity after that experience.
My big question is:
Can I replace the the housing and spring assembly to get rid of that assinine key-lock-safety thing?
Does anyone have experience with permamently replacing or disabling this backwards feature?
I was hoping for some type of drop in replacement that would not alter anything except that locking feature.
Also, and I feel sort of silly asking, what's the deal with magazines? Are all the 7 or 8 rounders going to fit the Mil-Spec?

Hello. Yes, you can replace the mainspring housing with your choice of arched or flat. The top plunger that rides against the bottom of the strut will need to be replaced as the one with the locking SA housing is of smaller diameter and won't be retained by the pin in the housing w/o the lock.
Just keep the part(s) for the original housing and it can be replaced should you opt to do so.
Best.
their is only 1 peice compared to no peices on the glock.not exactly an meaningful statement.;z

can you just not live with it? it can be turned off then you can throw away the key. it won't flip itself on, i assure you. save your money for something that would be a more meaningful addition.

I agree, I think it only makes sense to replace the housing if you are going for a flat housing instead of arched. I like the look and feel of my Mil Spec's arched Main Spring Housing so I am keeping it as is. I'm not worried about that lock... it affects nothing if I don't turn it on. And it's so small that most people would not even notice it. In fact all of my non-1911 gun friends admire the gun and never even ask questions about the ILS lock.;? I don't think they ever notice it.
Cheers!

I feel a pistol needs less things to keep it from working not more things. I don't like the idea of another thing that can go wrong. I also don't like the "politically correct" motives for making a firearm "more safe". I like the Glock due to its lack of crap that you have to do before pulling the trigger. I don't like that the 1911 had to be modified due to politics. I want one less thing to worry about, not one more thing.
Its more a principles thing for me. So for $40 or so I will replace the housing and disable that stupid key.
Would you buy a Glock with a key safety system?

New Glocks come with a locking/key system, at least the ones in the Glock Annual that I looked at do. ;?
Nonetheless, it's your 1911... and what good is living if you can't customize your 1911??? ;f
