View Full Version : I fired a 1911 for the first time today.
I was at the range and some guy offered for me to try out his 1911. Now I am a rifle person and am not of legal age to purchase a handgun so this was a great experience for me. Previously I had only fired .22 handguns and I once used a glock 19 at a range for about an hour.
Everyone kept telling me "oh man that .45 recoil is monster" "are you sure you can handle that?" ect.. well I thought the 9mm was nothing.
After I fired it, it wasn't that bad at all. I am small guy and it was no problem for me to fire it. It definitely snapped more than the 9mm but it was nothing crazy. very controllable.
I really loved that thing I can't wait to turn 21 so I can buy one. (a glock too of course!)

1911's are a gift from heaven.
You learned a valuable lesson. Do not believe what you hear. There are way too many gun myths out there and too many "experts' some actually work at gun shops. I remember one salesman who actually said to me the 357 is not much more powerfull than a 38 special. I just grinned and walked away. My 14 yr old son said as we walked away "he is crazy".

The 1911 is a great design.... hopefully you will get started on a great 1911 collection soon... I find the 9mm glocks much more snappy than 45acp 1911's... and find the 1911's more pleasant to shoot.

The good news is that there are lots of great 1911's out there. You can spend 600 or 2600 dollars and still get a reliable 1911 that is a pleasure to shoot.

Don't believe nothing you hear, and only half of what you see. ;)

Congrats ZEL, I think that anybody who shoots a ton of 22LR out of all kinds of guns and develops good gun handling habits, learns trigger control, how to breathe and shoot with a sight picture does just fine. It takes a while to learn all the things involved in shooting, and what better vehicle is there than thousands of rounds through a 22 rifle and handgun. The 1911 is a great design, as is the Glock, 3rd generation S&W auto's, CZ's and the High Power. Shoot em all if you can, find what you like and bliss out!
The first time I shot one was when I had enough money to by one.Its a good thing to be offered the opportunity to fire alot of different guns. But, man, I felt big when the big goverment model started barking.I dont think I hit any sort of group.I was too excitteD.A good colt 1991 or other basic plain jane 1911 is all you need.
