View Full Version : PM9 Extractor Issue

I have a Kahr PM9 that's got about 240 rounds through it and is still not reliable. It won't go completely into battery, being held up just short of locking up. I've traced the problem to the extractor, where the round is being snagged.
The question is this - has anyone else had this problem? I don't think I want to take any tension out of the extractor but am thinking I should pull it out and put a bit more radius on the bottom and polish it nicely, which should make it feed a bit better.
I've played with the gun a number of different ways and am sure the issue is around the extractor.
The way the round is being held up as it feeds leads me to believe that another 100 rounds isn't going to cure it.
Looking for any commentary please.
TIA

Racer...I had the exact same problem amongst others. Kahr told me "that's nothing that a new spring can't fix, not a big problem at all" when I told her it wouldn't go completely back to battery. Is is holding back about 1/4 of an inch? That's what mine was doing.

That's what I would do. ^c

Mine stovepiped 5 to 10% of the time. Also had ftf issues. I was very unsure of the depending on this gun for ccw. A new spring and about 800 rounds cured it. I have about 4 to 5,000 rounds through it with no issues now. Not one stovepipe or ftf. I have shot hollow point, ball and extreme shock. All in differant grains and powder loads. I believe the break-in polished the ramp. Could have done it quicker with a dremel. I also load the first round with the slide release. I also use a soft brush on the extractor when cleaning it.
In short, shoot it, shoot it, shoot it and then clean it. It will break in. I carry mine all the time now and trust it.
This is the same problem I have - failure to completely chamber a round from time-to-time. This improved dramatically after I mirror polished the feed ramp.
During the last 100 rounds it only happened to the last round in the long mag. There is probably 500 rounds through the gun.
Kahr is sending the "black" (stronger) spring in the next week or so, but I would be curious to see exactly what your extractor polish/radius resolution is.
The spring seems like a brute force fix that a better job of interior finishing might just have done from the beginning.
About 1 yr ago (+/-) Kahr recalled the barrel on a group of PM9's of which mine was one. They polished the feed ramp although I did not know the reason at the time of sending it in, I thought I'd perhaps get a new barrel... I did not have any issues with it prior to the recall, except the purchase of a new recoil spring, after already having 5-600 rounds through it, but sent it in anyway.
Having purchased my PM9 about a year and a half ago they were notorious for having a shorter recoil spring in the new weapons that were shorter than any seperately purchased spring. This caused a frequent failure to return to battery. The new spring was a full 1/8" longer and it was known that a person should order a spring when ordering the gun! ...Geez, but everything else has been wonderful, as I had anticipated.
I trust mine, not a single problem of any kind whatsoever after the initial installation of a new spring. Kahr recommends new springs every 1000 rounds, at least I think that was the noted periodicity?
Oh, anybody out there use the PM9 at any kind of shooting events? "Rock your Glock" or "Steel challenge" or IDPA or anything? Tell us about it, if so.
