Today I went to one of the local stores here in Fayetteville, nc. I seldom if ever go to this store, but I decided to see if they had any colt's. Well by chance they did a series 70 goverment model condition 95-97 percent, and a Mk4 blue enhanced goverment model same condition. So after some small talk with the owner I asked him if he would be willing to do some trading. He asked what I wanted to trade I said a Nib early production S&W 1911. The owner looked at my gun and said he has to many 1911's and would rather keep what he has than do a trade. I was surprised he didnt want to at least see what I wanted for price in trade. Heck I was only wanting $500 for my smith and would have paid the diffrence in price.Heck the guy then commented that smith&wesson floods the market with guns so there pretty much worthless. This comes from a dealer who had every kimber and springfield they make. My only reason for getting rid of this gun is that I have narrowed my collecting down to Colt's.I was out looking to add to the herd! larry:cool:

Yeah S&W are pertty much worthless. Your better off just giving it away.... Heck, I'd even be willing to take it off your hands. Just send it to me I won't even charge you a disposal fee.

Seriously, If I had $500, I'd take it in a heart beat. I hope to pick one up sometime next year.

Are you kidding me? What kind of question is that? I collect colts and thats the brand I perfer, But S&W makes a fine 1911. In my opinion better than kimbers and springfields. Now I'm not out to start a flame war so dont interpret my comments as such. ;g

The guy said he already had too many and would rather keep what he had than do a trade. Tell me where he considers your gun 'valueless' .

He said S&W floods the market with pistols there for they dont hold there value. And the way he dealt with the situation and his facial expressions pretty much said it all. He was more than willing to trade when I asked him if would do such. When I actually put him to his word he scofffed. Now I maybe guilty of over reacting but I dont think so. I tend to be a man of my words if I tell you I will do somthing I do it. His loss anyway traded gun plus some cash for a NIB Colt series 70 Goldcup at a more friendly gun store....;Q

I have found that many "dealers" ,gun shops, favor can one brand over the other for many reasons other than the quality of the gun.
Personal relationships, service, pricing, whatever!
A lot of Kimber master dealers have no interest in selling anything but Kimber's. I'm not blaming them, but you can lose sales if they are too biased IMHO.

Of course, the largest and maybe "smartest" ones carry a lot of different brands and let the consumer decide.

Larry, he did you a favor. Now you can sell it in a private deal, get more money, and go buy the Colt(s).

Sounds to me like you owe this guy a favor now. ;)

If "market flooding" was a factor, then you wouldn't be able to give a Glock away. I think this dealer was trying to chew you down into giving it away, thus increasing his eventual profit. This is a good lesson as you need to find a more reputable dealer. If you would have been happy with $500. for the S&W 1911, I too would be happy to buy from you at that price. But, you'll need to have an established track record, either at e-bay or Auction Arms.

Would love to sell it to you ,But traded it in at my favorite gun shop for a Colt SS Delta Goldcup...He gave me more than what I was asking and worked things so that it came out fair for both of us...;f

Glad you came out okay. Has anyone ever noticed how when a dealer has something in his case, it is "limited edition special piece" that explains why it is worth top dollar, but if you try to trade him the same gun it is "something so special I'd have to find the right buyer for so I can't give you very much"? Man, I know they are in business to make a living, just quit trying to make it all off of one sale, right!

Sounds like it's a problem in more places than just here in north carolina! I have also noticed that my friend and I know more than most of the typical idiot's who work in gun stores. I don't know how many times I have been told colt's out of buisness, Doesn't sell to civilians anymore blah, blah,blah...My favorite is none of the distributors have any in stock...I can go to ellet bro's right now and they have 147 colt 1911's in stock....WTF?:soap:

There are companies that do a lot of cloning and there are companies that do their own R&D. Check out the S&W website and their new light weight wheel guns - including magnums - and think about the R&D that went into the tooling and production of these pieces at an affordable price for the consumer.

S&W has made quality pieces for a long time and their brand is held in high regard on other 1911 boards.

Adios,
Bob

I walk into a gunshop in Massachusetts with a mint condition/unfired Colt Government model 1911...very hard to find here. He offered me...wait for it, wait for it..."$275 maybe $300. With all these customized 1911's noone's going to pay for a stock Colt."

I guess he forgot he already had one in the used case, priced at $1050...nowhere near as nice as mine. Damn, I thought used car salesman were bad.

I have told many here about the wonderful gunshops we have here in Connecticut;Q One particular shop that I used to go to was notorious for ripping people off.

I had spent quite a bit of money there and had many disagreements on price, value, and customer honesty with them. They would say something this week and next week the story would be completely different, depending on how it benefited them at the moment.

Quick story:
One day a fella walks in and has a Model 60 S&W revolver with 2" bbl. he wanted to trade in towards a Glock and pay the difference. He showed one of the salesmen there the M60 which was still new in the box and never fired. The salesman tells the guy that no one wants the 'J' frame anymore as they are junk compared to the new small semi-autos such as Glock. He tells the guy that he sells ten Glocks for every revolver he sells.

The customer must of turned ten shades of red and then he BLEW! He went absolutely ballistic. He told the guy exactly what he thought of him, his shop, his salesmen, and his business ethics.

It seems the salesman told the customer a different story the year before when the guy came into the shop for a Glock and ended up buying the revolver instead, because of this same salesman. The salesmen told him that Glocks were unsafe and dangerous. The Smith was THE gun for CCW and backup carry. All the police use them. On and on and on.........

I was rolling on the floor laughing my ass off. There were at least a dozen customers in the store and they were gone in a few minutes. Needless to say he lost a lot of business that day.

It goes to show, if these shop owners would just be honest and truthful, they would never get caught in a lie. DON'T BELIEVE ANYTHING THEY TELL YOU IN A GUNSHOP WHEN THERE IS MONEY INVOLVED. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH.

Ninety-five percent of the people on this site know as much as the average gunshop owner and probably a lot more about guns. I can't count the number of times I have been in a shop and had to correct information given to a customer that I knew was wrong.

Eddie C.

P.S. They offered the guy with the Smith $50.00.;P The guy had walked out with his gun. If he had turned it in towards the Glock for $50.00, the shopowner would of stuck it in his case and sold it as NEW and put a sticker on it for $399.95. GUARANTEED!

I have the S&W 1911 Sc and I rather have that then any P.O.S Kimber or Colt any day.

My S&W has been flawless from the first shot through 4000+ Rnds of all types of JHP and FMJ ammo, thats more then I can say about all the Kimbers and Colts that I have owned (past tense).

Now I am not trying to start a war thats based on my past experience and an extensive one that is with this three brands over the last 30 years. (Of course there were no S&W 1911's that far back)

My local gunsmith/gundealer guy is the polar opposite of the stories I'm reading here. He always, always sells his guns to me at way below the price tag, is eager to answer questions about guns and shooting techniques, and is stone cold my-word-is-my-bond honest with customers. It's a shame that the good guys like that don't get more posts dedicated to them.

You're dead right, FATSEXY. Whenever possible, I drive 75 miles each way to deal with Plainfield Shooting Supplies. He too is true to his word. His prices are already some of the lowest around, and when he offers you a deal, he stands by it. Too bad most shops treat us like idiots and try to make all their profit on one sale.

I drive 40 minutes or so to Southern Pines, just the other side of Ft. Bragg from Fayetteville, to buy at Ed's. Ive gone to shooters supply, and have been treated good but Ed's is the best by far, and its not a gun/pawn shop, which is nice. While Jim's has a big selection, they have just as big prices. Every gunshop in Fayetteville is over priced, not just Jims. I would rather drive to Ed's and have a better experince and better prices.
