View Full Version : Dealer comments about Springfield?
Asking local dealer about Springfield's Small 1911-A1 in Stainless with 3.5" barrell.
His supplier is out and don't know how long before can get in.
Dealer said the Springfield will loosen up after several rounds but the Kimber Ultra Carry with 3" barrell won't.
He can get the Kimber within a couple days.
Just wondering what you folks had to say about this - if you agree with what he said or if you think diff?
Thanks.

He is right about the compact Springfields getting harder to get. I see lots of people looking for them but no one has any. And every 1911 loosens up a bit with use and time.

Besides, you'll be lucky if you can get enough rounds to GO down the barrel of a series II Kimber to loosen it up!;f
my series onE( by default)really an origonal kimber ultra carry 3 inch.my slide still has no perceivable mlateral or north south movment after 3-4 years.i only have maby 500-750 round count.i wouldnt by a series 2 cause i dont care for the external ejector.my colts 1 delta elite and a goverment model in 38 super have slight wiggle in different directions..
My SA UC has less than 5000 rounds through it and you can use it for a New Year's Eve Rattle. SA's are typically much looser than Kimbers. One of my Series II Kimbers has over 25K through it and both the slide and barrel still have no movement.
(People who don't believe that machinery needs a break-in are usually happy with SA's and Fords.)

I love Springers, can't stand Fords, and you will NEVER make me believe that crap Kimber spews about 500 rounds because their guns are so "precision fit". I've had a lot of 1911s that were fit as tight or tighter than any Kimber I've seen, that ran great right out of the box. Kimbers used to be great guns. The series II really created no problems. Their external extractors did. No other quality gun on the market today has as differing quality as Kimber does. One gun will be great, the next a POS, with no way of telling which one you are spending money on until it's too late.
More on thread, I personally would stick with a full size 1911, regardless of which manufacturer you like. Smaller guns can be very reliable, but that are also more likely to be "finicky" than a full size. Good luck,
Kimbers run right out of the box just like Baers do but still need to be broken in like Baers. They aren't in the same class but still need those rounds. Break-in doesn't mean problems, it just means the metal to metal surfaces need to rub and mate for smoothness.
You can believe whatever you want. The fact is that the vast majority of Kimbers work just fine out of the box.
And FWIW, I see far more problems with NIB SA's than I do Kimbers. Things like sights and plunger tubes falling off seem almost common.

Save yourself some trouble. Try and find a Colt Defender or a Officers model. Mine have been trouble free and run with now problems right out of the box. And I didn't need no brake in period....;a

If you do a search I am sure you find many more problems with new Kimbers as opposed to Springfield Armory.

I would bet that Kimber sells a lot more 1911's than Springfield does so maybe that has something to do with it.

Well if you're so smart how many do each of them sell a year?

I can't quote you exact numbers, but I can tell you that Kimber doesn't sell enough guns over what Springfield does to explain the constant bad press about Kimber. I myself owned two that were total trash.
BTW, I've never claimed to be "so smart", just very opinionated!;g
All I can say is that my next, and 5th 1911, will once again be a Colt.

"HORSE POOP!"
++++
This dealer sounds questionable to me in making a statement like that.
What he meant to say is I don't wna to sell you the Springer because I have these Kimbers right now and I make more money on those.
I am assuming he is talking abou the slide to frame fit loosening up a little. Hells bells they all do. The parts rub together and polish off the high spots which makes them seem loose. That is unless you spend the jack and get a custom hand lapping job done on your slide and frame. Even then they will wear. It may not be as evident as soon but the wear is there.
I'm a little more old school than that. In my mind barrel/bushing fit is much more important than a super tight slide.
They are both great guns.

It took ten days to come up with "horse poop" ?
Funny, the "my Kimber works great" posts seem to keep coming from the same posters over and over and over. I guess you either love em or hate em, no in between.;1

Don't beleive every thing the gun shop commandos and GT trolls expell.
A lot of it frequently smells really bad.
So, You still thinking on it or did you decide?
Any Military experience or otherwise with the "GI" 45's?
If so, you'll quickly recognize the fact that it doesn't have to be a "Bullseye" competition tight gun to do the job.
FWIW..my next 1911 could just possibly be a springer GI model or a lightweight/stainless Colt Officer's acp ,
After MUCH deliberation, research etc... I've got a Colt Defender on order. Should have it within a couple days...
Thanks everyone for your input.

I have 3 Colts (2 series 70s and a pre-A1 150,000 serial range), 2 Springfields (one is a MicroComp), and 1 Kimber series II with an external extractor. The only one that gives me any trouble at all is one of the Colts. It's a MkIV/Series 70 with a G serial number.
