You know, I've stumbled accross the old "Buckeye" Blackhawks chambered in 38-40 and 10mm. I want one!! I'm pretty sure I heard somebody on GT has one. I do believe it's time Ruger do another run of these bad boys ;)If anybody can find one for a resonable price feel free to chime in.

The going rate seems to be ~$550+ for one in mint condition. I understand these have a steel frame unlike the alloy frame of most Blackhawk's.
I want to get one of these because the 38-40 is legal for deer hunting in Kansas (where I hunt) while the more powerful 10mm is not... Go figure!

Check this article out. Note the particular gun has a Bisley grip, albeit not stock.

Oh BTW, I've found a couple for sale over the internet. Gunbroker.com and gunsamerica.com has a few. Want a single action 10mm?!!

Yeah, but those particular listings all seem to be a tad high except for the one's that are NIB for around $600...
These guns are down my list a way anyway. First, I want to get a S&W 1046, a Star Megastar in Starvel finish, and a Bren SFL and/or SFD.

There are two .401 bores from ruger. They made a Blackhawk in .38-40/10mm and a Vaquero stainless in .38-40/.40 S&W. The cylinders changed out. Keep in mind though that since it is a single action and no moonclips are used, 10mm and .40 S&W won't work in the same cylinder. The Blackhawk Buckeye only shot .38-40 or 10mm and the Vaquero only shot .38-40 or .40. There was also a Blackhawk made in .32-20/.32 Mag, but that's not important (kidding).

Here is mine. Got it from a dealer online and it was better than as advertised. Everything mint other than being handled. It came with all papers, manuals, boxes, plastic bag, reuseable wiretie, vapor paper still on the 10MM Auto cylinder, as close to NIB as you'll get with a pre-owned gun. The dealer had purchased a complete set of the Ruger Blackhawk line for the year 1990(if I recall correctly)from a private collector. My gun was one of a pair of limited run convertibles for Buckeye sports of Ohio. Only 5000 of the 38-40Win/10MM Auto Buckeye Blackhawk convertibles were made. My Buckeye Blackhawk and a 32-20/32Mag Buckeye Convertible were consecutively numbered. Sadly he had already sold the 32-20/32Mag. Mine was $549.00 delivered. FWIW I feel the 6.5 inch barrel is nearly perfect for the 10MM Auto in a hunting handgun.

10MMGary,
Have you shot it yet ? They handle great & shoot better. The 38-40/10MM convert is actually on a SuperBlackHawk frame, because of the physical size of the 38-40 ctg (10MM Rimmed)
I've run ammo thru mine that is actually too hot for a Glock G20 or a S&W 1006, & it shoots like a .41Mag. Very accurate, like my other Ruger single actions.
We occasionally have some show up in the midwest here....I'm about 50mi NW of Chi. & will keep my eyes open.
I actually own 2 of them, the other is still NIB & is 1 of only 2 or 3 firearms in my collection like that....I play with my toys !
I even shoot bowling pins with a "Little Old Lady from Pasadena", yep, a series 180 .44 AutoMag.
My shooter came from a Ruger collector who had a pair of them. The one he kept has the SN to go with his Buckeye .32-20/32Mag.
Loaded hot & heavy bullets (200gr) seems to give best accuracy.
shoot safe....have fun !

Hi Gents.
Sorry to drag up this old thread, but I am looking for an excellent cond. Ruger Buckeye 10mm/38-40. If anyone should want to part with one or know someone who may, please let me know.

We've got a local show coming up in May. I'll keep my eyes open, as one dealer who shows there has had them in the past.

Hey Chris,
Didn't have any luck at the show last weekend on the Buckeye, but the dealer that's had them in the past says he thinks that there's another coming in with a collection he's bidding on.
He's a longtime friend & said he'd keep me posted.
So we keep trying.

Thanks Albert!
My wife and I are getting ready to mive up your way soon (WI) and "liquid" funds are a little tight now as we prepare, but I'd still appreciate the info as I might still be able to swing it.
Thanks again.

Hey now....I was BORN a CHEESEHEAD and I have always been one.
With the help of someone on GT (sorry, I forget who) I picked one up NIB for $600 about a year ago.
I also have a .40 Vaguero that was an overrun of a special edition for the San Diego Sheriffs Dept. Someday I'll ream it out to 10 mm. Too many projects going on right now.:)

What loads did you find were too hot for your G20?
Mine loves everthing DT makes, you must have some really hot handloads! I can see a fully enclosed Cly. being better for nuclear level loads. What are the spec's?
VN350X10

I won't give the spec, promised I wouldn't.
BUT........
If you just HAPPEN to find a 1st ed. VhitaVouri hardbound load manual, (moose on cover) Check out the 180gr/N350 loads. If possible before you load them, find a 2nd. ed. manual (hardbound) or cross reference with the V-V online data.
at H.P.White labs, some of these approached 80,000 psi. Brass goes plastic between 80-85,000
I was only loaded to the starting load, but I was using magnum primers (all I had). This is why I tend to get all "ranty" about NOT using magnum primers with V-V powders. They CAN be over-ignited.
BE CAREFUL !!!!!
uncle
ps....the 1st ed. was RECALLED by V-V. If you had one, they'd give you a 2nd in exchange free. I promised that my copy is now "library ref. only".

That works, If the mis-published load is so extreme as to be unsafe, (IMO 80,000 psi would be unsafe in any handgun although the fully enclosed, heavy cylinders of a magnum revolver would be safer) I don't think you can really say it is something an auto couldn't handle. I'm sure there are plenty of reloaders out there than can cook up some rounds that can kill just about any pistol you can think of. I thought there were some "off the shelf" rounds that were too hot... You had me worried a bit…
I know Mike uses the G20 as his test pistol to develop his custom 10mm loads, and while I do not currently hand load, I feel comfortable shooting just about anything from DT and most other reparable sources in a stock G20. I do use a Barsto barrel when I shoot lead though.

There were several calibers that had a problem in that manual, but for some reason, 10MM & .40 S&W were about the worst.
It wasn't limited to handguns, however, there were several rifle loads also.
It seemed to me that somebody made an error in translating from grams to grains. Kinda hairy there.....
FWIW, My G20 didn't suffer any real damage, but when it did go "KB" was on round # 7 of the handloads. My bad, but I didn't bother picking up the fired brass from 1-6, as 1) it was a starting load & 2)the point of impact & felt recoil were right in line with factory Norma ammo. Even the round that failed printed in the group, about 1 1/2" @ 50', hand held.
But the brass ended up the size of a .40, the hard way. Never did find the head of the brass or the primer, even with sweeping the entire range. I was testing on a night with no customers & I worked there, so I had the range to myself, with only 1 other shooter there.
Had I picked up #1, I would have stopped right there, as it was badly bulged, something that the factory Norma never did.
uncle albert
gotta add a PS here.....
Mike's stuff is quite hot in some loadings, but due to his QC, it is also quite well developed & safe. I'd put DT loads thru any of my guns !
