View Full Version : That NATO surplus ammo on Ammoman ? Soujurn 07-20-2005, 05:28 Has anyone ordered any of this? How did it perform for you? RENEA 07-20-2005, 09:39 It's US milspec 9mm ammo. Hot stuff, well made and accurate. I've fired 10,000 rds of it in my HK's and G 17 without incident. Buy while he still has any. busey 07-20-2005, 12:42 Being hot is a turnoff, especially in 9mm. With WWB and Blazer why bother? RENEA 07-20-2005, 13:38 Originally posted by busey Being hot is a turnoff, especially in 9mm. With WWB and Blazer why bother? The Glock 9mm's are ALL designed to fire NATO 9mm. I get excellent accuracy with the Federal 9mm NATO. Don't knock it before ya try it:cool: Fredericksburg 07-22-2005, 09:33 I'm expecting to get 1000 rounds early next week. This ammo is fine to fire in my G26, right? I did not realize that it is loaded to higher pressure than most 9mm. Normally I shoot standard pressure rounds although hotter ammo will be better practice as far as being similar to a typical carry round. Glocks are designed to handle a constant diet of this round, no? I can report on the ammo once I fire it, but I don't have much to compare to since this is a new 26, and my first 9mm (and Glock) to boot. I got the 26 for a summer carry gun that is easier to conceal than my Steyr M40. Enjoy. new2mud 07-22-2005, 11:45 Originally posted by busey Being hot is a turnoff, especially in 9mm. With WWB and Blazer why bother? One reason to bother is a cheaper practice alternative to a +p carry load. The NATO loads provide closer handling charateristics for those who carry, say, Speer GD 124 +p than a WWB or Blazer would. PaddyDaddyO 07-23-2005, 08:20 It is my understanding that the NATO ammo is loaded hotter to ensure proper function in SMGs and the like. The Finnish ammo I was running was warmer than WWB certainly, but not so much that it was an issue. Accurate stuff, and cheap too! Don't get me wrong, I'm not concerned with accuracy or my 19 handling the round, I just don't care for hot ammo. No prob:) Wasn't trying to call you out or anything. Enjoy your G 19;c busey 07-23-2005, 13:55 Originally posted by new2mud One reason to bother is a cheaper practice alternative to a +p carry load. You'll be so jacked up on adrenaline and scared you won't hear or feel anything. You damn sure won't be able to tell if you're firing standard pressure, +P or +P+. When I'm getting blazer for $83/1000 I can't see paying $159/1000. It all goes bang.;f busey 07-23-2005, 13:56 Originally posted by RENEA No prob:) Wasn't trying to call you out or anything. Jim 07-23-2005, 22:32 Last winter I bought some of the Ammoman 9mm NATO. It is nice quality but significantly underloaded for NATO, in fact I suspect that is available because it didn't meet minimumn velocity. From a Browning Hi Power, 10 shot average: Winchester 124 NATO, various lots: 1170-1210 fps Civilian 124 gr FMJ, various lots: 1060-1080 fps Ammoman Federal 124 NATO: 1117 fps Merkavaboy 07-24-2005, 15:41 Originally posted by PAPhil So how does Ammoman NATO compare to Hirtenberger 9mm for hot and accurate? Price range? Both Federal's & Winchester's 124FMJ NATO loads are in the area of 1250 fps. The Hirtenberger Patrone 124FMJ L7A1 ammo is reportedly 1500 fps. Southern Ohio Gun advertises HP +P+ ammo for $5.95 box of 50, but I don't know if this is actually "L7A1" ammo or not. I've emailed them to confirm whether or not the label on the box actually has "L7A1" on it, but so far, no response. There is a person on Gunbroker.com that's auctioning L7A1 ammo for $8.15 box of 50, and SJD SPORTS is auctioning it for $220 per 1200 rnd. case. I guess I'll have to order a few boxes of the "+P+" ammo from SOG to find out if it is actually the hot HP L7A1 ammo. If you're interested, here's the link for SOG and the Gunbroker auctions: http://www.southernohiogun.com/ammo2.html http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=35033671 http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=35113083 Just as a side note, +P, +P+ and NATO ammo is not always necessarily any "hotter" than other ammo; it just means that these rounds operate at a higher pressure than standard ammo. You can get some +P+ and NATO ammo that's high pressured AND hot, or just high pressured and not so hot. I guess the proof is in the testing and that's where it's good to have a chronograph to be able to check yourself. RENEA 07-25-2005, 13:18 FWIW I've shot 4,000 rds of the L7A1 9mm from Hirtenbirger. Loaded extremely hot and the velocities were pushing 1480 fps from a stock G17. vBulletin® v3.7.3, Copyright ©2000-2009, Jelsoft Enterprises Ltd. | ![]() |
