Was checking another poll and found this and, well, it got me spun up a bit. Somewhat dated, but from a poll of 24 June...
Washington, DC – The latest AP/Ipsos poll shows opposition to reinstating a military draft is strong; nearly half of Americans strongly oppose a draft, and a majority of Americans say that if they had a child old enough to serve in the military, they would discourage their son or daughter from enlisting. (emphasis mine)
--------
Thinking about the numbers that go with those things underlined above, I feel fortunate that I get to meet the fine men & women I do that pass through where I work; they restoreth my faith, as it were, and I'm so proud of them and remain optimistic - for me the glass is half full. :)
For those in the apparent 49% who would not dissuade their children from serving in the military, thank you for passing on some great values that keep our country as the benchmark of freedom, even if it means placing your most precious resource at some risk. You obviously know that character is doing the right thing even when no one is looking.
For those who regard such service as something for their child to be dissauded from, keep it up. You'll get your draft back and then you'll wonder why no one's made arrangements for student deferments that suit you. You cannot have it both ways. This country is an experiment still in its infancy relative to the rest of the world. It survives because principled people get up and give a little to do what's necessary to sustain it remembering that, at the time, our Founding Fathers were committing treason.
What message are you sending to your children? If it's, "Let George (or George's kid) do it" then you need to examine what you take from this country and those citizens who will get off the bench, however briefly.
Thanks for listening; exhaling now.
"Someone who is nice to you, but rude to the waiter, is not a nice person."
