View Full Version : Win. 147 gr. SXT Same as Ranger?

Looking for a home defense load for my 17L. I prefer heavy bullets. I am not concerned with overpenetration liability. My nearest FFL carries Win. Supreme SXT 147's and 115 grain Silvertips. He sells a lot of the SXT's to local PD's (Many small town agencies buy there).
He does not carry Rangers. Are the SXt's the same thing? The longer barrel of the 17L should squeeze a few extra f.p.s. out of them, but not too much I'm sure.
The SXT's shoot like lazer beams out of the 17L, so I'm hoping they're a good choice.
Are the SXT's comparable to the Ranger load?

talk to a jerk at winchester the other day - one rude dude.... makes me not want to use their ammo after that experience. he said YES - there is a significant difference between the sxt and the rangers - sxt has something like 8 or 9 petals and theranger has maybe 6 petals but the ranger petals are razor sharp. bullet shape or truncation is the same. he also said heavier was the best and the way to go - the 127 was garbage and too light - I agree with that but i always used the heaviest rd.

p.s. I was going to buy a half of case but the price was really high - I am pleased with the Gold dots and the dots that I have access to are rather cheap compared to the rangers and have decided just today to not order the rangers afterall - a difference of $7-8 for 50 rds adds up when you buy 300-500 rds.

I will stay with my 147 gr gold dots!

thank you please.

Interesting, thanks.
My local guy is a Winchester distributer and he orders whatever I want, and at a good price. I think I'll get some Rangers. I wonder why the local Police departments choose the SXT's? Maybe they just don't know or care about the difference.
Gold Dot's would be fine too, but I'd have to order over the 'net.
I've got a case of Winchester 147 fmj flat points on the way. I think I'm gunna' like this heavy bullet business.

You did not talk to Winchester. They would not have bashed the 127 or even given you a price on Ranger ammo. You must have talked to a Gunshop rambo that knew nothing about anything.

wrong hotpig or dumbpig - I talked to a guy from Winchester ammunition - i emailed him about some info on one day he emailed me maybe 5 emails of info - he called me about another question I had the following day - so if you have no clue what the hell you are talking about or were not sitting in my office when the call went down down be such an *******!

I no the guys name but am not saying it in this forum and he had a crappy attitude and he said between the two grain rounds - the heavy was the clear winner. OK - no bull****!

Someone hates being called out. If you wanted a price on Ranger ammo and were a Law Enforcement Agency or FFL with a LE Letterhead she would refer you to a Ranger Distributor in your state.

hotpig - you have to mentally touched if you think I am going to make up a thing like this for a stupid post on Glocktalk...the guy at winchester was either technical or LE that I spoke with and he was a jerk because he really was griping about doing his job which was to talk to people about their products..... I have more and even lesser important **** to do than to answer your stupid ass posts re: my making something like this up.

I asked the guys honest opinion re: a service load and he stated his opinion and that actually is what I think too. His personality was lacking and cordialness to it re: our conversation....

The pepole at Speer have busted their butt do answer and help and over accomdate me in my search for knowledge and answer.

this guy at winchester was a joke and crude.

Hence wy I would rather buy Gold dots than the Ranger T's

Support a good company and GD's are an excellent load....

reply hotpig all you want - but that is my last post re: weird accusations of my making this up or taking to some gun shop dude....

you must a sci-fi writer - for you like making your own version of reality up.

I think you just wanted to bash Winchester. That is fine, there is nothing wrong with having an opinion or liking Gold Dot ammo. I still say you exaggerated to try to back up your opinion. I can tear this down to what sounds right and what does not.

[QUOTE] talk to a jerk at winchester the other day - one rude dude [QUOTE]

Could have happened. Winchester is one of the biggest and best paying employers in my area. There is very little turnover and folks try to keep their jobs. Somebody like this would end up on Public Aid real soon.

[QUOTE]the 127 was garbage and too light [QUOTE]

See my statement above.

[QUOTE]I was going to buy a half of case but the price was really high [QUOTE]

There is no way in heck that they would talk price to you. IF you were a LE Agency or a Winchester Dealer they would refer you to a Ranger Distributor. There are only about twenty in North America.

[QUOTE]a difference of $7-8 for 50 rds [QUOTE]

Normally Ranger is cheaper than Gold Dots, Golden Saber, and Federal Tactical ammo. Just do a quick check of auction boards and ammo dealers. That will prove my point. Right now the RA9T is going for 15.00 per 50 rounds on auction. If you have a source for 50 rounds of 147gr Gold Dots for seven or eight bucks (not the reclassified stuff)please share the info with you fellow Glockers.

Now I am finished with this debate. It has went on longer than it should have.;k

I'm in the same boat man. I just got a 17L myself, and I've been trying to decide on a home defense load. I am currently using Winchester Silvertips because they are fairly inexpensive, and fast for a 147gr. From a 4" barrel they are rated at 1010 fps, so I imagine the 6" barrel should bring that up to 1060 fps at least. Standard pressure 9mm has never looked so good my friend!! ;Y

...and with the heavier bullet and the longest possible barrel, muzzle blast and flash will be at a minimum.
I know they have re-designed some of the Silvertips. I'm not sure if the X9MMST147 (win 147 Silvertip) load is one of the new ones. I have a case of 10mm Silvertips stashed. They are one of the last loads that come fully waterproofed. Something this old river rat likes.
There was a thread about how to tell which Silvertips had been re-designed.
Does anyone know?
P.S.
Maybe hotpig and BlackGlock can call a truce?

HAMMERHEAD, To my knowledge the current 147gr Silvertip is nearly identical to the 147gr WWB JHP except for it's 'silver' appearance. However it is loaded somewhat hotter, and according to David from ammolab.com it does better through autoglass. This may be a combination of an improved jacket, and it's higher velocity. :) ;c

I never started anythging - just told what happened to me the other day re: my discussion - again from a real live guy/human at winchester that this arrogant hotpig thinks I made up---

I also am not trying to bad mouth winchester---I used black talons and SXT's for years and never had one problem with them at all and carried them daily - in multiple calibers.... so NO - not trying to bad mouth winchester - I have no time for such childish sh&^....

Just tellin it like it happened....

if it weren't for the price THAT I CAN get them at - I may have tried them - the best prices i know of are no where near what HPig states....

I can also see why he has the name HOT PIG - is has a bad attitude and nasty temperament....

I was just asking questions to get up to snuff with some rounds...hence my statement and hence PGI calling me a liar pretty much in his connotations and imlplied statements.....I find a lot of arrogant dudes hear and opinionated $ssHoles too...I am out of here!

Forums generally seem to suck due to closed minded people....it is too bad....

more time for me to shoot then peruse such childish horse manure.

;Q Both the SXT, and Ranger T are fine rounds. The Ranger is obviously the better of the two, as it was designed to be! Although I do not agree with Winchester releasing a more effective round for LEO, it is how it is. The Ranger T is available from a number of sources online (some on GT). If the difference is a deal breaker, go with the Ranger T. The SXT is a fine expander as well, albeit the Ranger T is better (has "talons"). Given identical shot placement the difference would likely be negligable. I prefer Silvertips at the moment because I can afford to practice with them, and they are available locally all the time. I am less of an ammo snob than I once was, and now value range time more than ammo selection. As long as the given round has proven it's worth on the street.
