View Full Version : M9 \ S9 qestions.
I am a glock owner (G26, G19) and would like to purchase a new polymer pistol. I feel that the M9 and S9 are well made weapons for the $$$. Here are my questions:
** Which model would you recommend that I purchase and why?
** Is the S9 a good pistol for CCW?
** Do you think that the new M9-A1 model is worth the extra money as compared to the older version M9’s?
** From your experience, are the Steyr pistols as reliable and durable as the Glocks?
Thank you for your input guys!!

I would hold off on one of the new as parts and service are problamatic.
At under $300.00 the M9 is a screaming deal.
Until Steyr has a presence in the US again it's not worth the money to get one of the newest models.
CDNN also has the Walther P99 (2003 models) at very attractive prices. You can parts and service for these.
Like many pistol models, some Steyr M&S models worked fine, others functioned poorly. I liked the ergonomics and bought 2 new M9s and neither extracted well. No backup for repair and the contract gunsmith couldn't repair it over the phone. Now someone else owns my Steyr problems.
for size comparison a S is smaller than a 19 but bigger than a 26.
S series has become hard to find. CDNN is the last place (from a distrubitor anyway) for the cheap blowout M9's. Unless you find one on gunbroker or etc.
Concerning the new model, how important is being able to hang toys off the front of your guns?
My two steyrs have been 99.8 out of maybe a combined 6-8,000 rounds and the few range trips it's given me problems I've always been able to trace it down and do a at home fix (mag cleaning, extractor removal and cleaning ahead of schedule because it was unusually filthy). I have also gone w/out cleaning because i was too busy and gone 600 rounds (over three trips) w/out a hitch.
You should realize these pistols have MUCH tighter tolerances and do require some more care (but not on any kind of 1911 finicky level). Think of glocks as being on the superloose super-reliable, shoots like mush side of the spectrum and steyrs being on the other superbly accurate great handling higher upkeep side w/ every other poly euro service pistol in the middle (p99, xd, usp, sigpro).
yes there have been problem guns as w/ any manufactured good. Yes there have been supply and importer and service issues (steyr is now bringing all these departments in-house instead of contracting out).
Yes it is a top tier firearm from a name company that is being cleared out at hi-point and taurus like prices not a fly by night company.
Yes some have had issues for a WIDE variety of reasons.
No it not the end all to be all of wonder pistols (like everyone in all the other clubs here at GT thinks theirs is).
Yes they are my favorite pistols and I can and do HIGHLY recomend them.
I also recomend that you get an old one from cdnn (ask for brian) and thourghly strip and clean it, esp the extractor, as it has been sitting in a TX warehouse for two years and all the factory lube has gone gummy. You might also want some grip-tape/a-grip/houge handall or something like that if your not getting the new model (but that price difference makes even this a decent savings:-)
Steyr is to Glock as Kimber is to Colt. or AR15 is to AK47.
Thank you FlaChef for your candid response, greatly appreciated.

Mine's the M40
I like the gun a lot. In fact I will be using it as my duty weapon once department quals happen
I have close to 500 rounds through mine with one issue that was ammo related and has not repeated .
One of the most ergonomic handguns made.

I too have a few questions about the M-9:
Considering purchasing a new Steyr M-9 fullsize 9mm (for CCW) during CDNN's "Styer Pistol Liquidation" and wanted to know how the overall quality is with this pistol?
Also have a few fine-tuning questions if you don't mind:
* What about reliability to shoot most 9mm factory ammo with no problems?
* Any quirks, negatives, or good / bad features to be aware of?
* How does the M-9 compare to a Glock, HK USP (TT series), Springfield's XD-9, or Ruger's 93 Compact in 9mm?
* Ease of maintenance?
* Recommended tips that are worthwhile on the M-9?
Thank-you in advance of your assistance!
