what is the difference with the Bulgarian, Russian etc... and which one should I get. I have a Sig 232 but it is going to be sold and want to replace it with a Mak, please help me pic a good one. Thanks in advance. Web sites or other info would be great, located in Missouri and have FFL that will take care of getting one from whatever source I want.

Here's some stuff to read:

The Bulgarians are the best value and easy to find. EGs are very nice but harder to find and about twice as much. I have an EG and Bulgarian. Both are great pistols.

big68, I own three custom Maks and one stock military Mak. One of the customs is a Bulgarian, two are East German (EG) Maks, and the stock Mak is an EG Mak. I really do not see enough difference between the Bulgie and the EG version to merit the price difference. In the end all I can advise you to do is buy a Mak! Regards, Richard ;f

I agree. The best place to start is with a Bulgarian Makarov. It is a great gun for around $150. The Russian military (fixed sights) are twice the money or more. That is because of their collectablity rather than quality.

You know you want one--get a Bulgie! You'll love it, guaranteed!

Beware, they are addictive. Get a Bulgie to start with, you'll end up wanting more. Can't have just one.

Thanks for all the info. I'll keep you posted when I finally buy one. I have been buying too many, according to my wife. 7 just last year.

Personally I would start with local gun shops. Just let them all know that you want a mak and if one comes thier way to let you know as youw will buy it immediately off of them. They would be happy to know they have an almost sure fire deal if they get one.

Save about 150 to 200 bucks and sit on it as "makarov" money. Think of it as already spent.

Any online way would require shipping and a FFL transfer fee. On a gun that cheap, it's not worth it.

Good luck.

BTW I second the bulgie. They are just as nice as the others, but cost less. They just don't have the fancier (not really better) sights and are not as rare. Otherwise, just as good.

WOW, I went to a gun shop this Saturday and found 3 Mak's. The EG was $450, the Polish was $325 and the Bulg was $375, and all looked VERY used. These guys were smoking crack.

I think it has to be stronger than crack. That is rediculous.

Have I found a deal for you. Jim's Guns in Beavercreek, OH has Bulgarian Makarovs for only $269.95 ;Q

I bet those guys can also get a sweet deal on a $1000 dollar beat up AK also.

Reminds me of the "ghetto" gun shop in my town. $350 for a HI POINT! Glocks bring $900 and HK USPs are around $1300.

But hey they will throw in a free Uncle Mike's universal nylon holster.

I have never paid over $175 for any of my Maks and that includes one Bulgie and three East Germans (EG). I gave $400 for a used EG but it had a better safety, hard chrome by Tripp, about 12 grips, two custom holsters and a magazine pouch, extra magazines, and 500 rounds of ammo. I figure this hard chromed EG cost me about $150 in hard cash. Regards, Richard;f
