I might be moving to the country and wondered if anyone here gets their internet service via satellite. I'd like to hear some comments from users if possible. Cheers.

I did a little research into the subject about 2 years ago. The cost was very high and the download and upload speeds were not on par with cable. Maybe just a little better than a slow dsl connection. If your into online gaming this is not the way to go.

We have had StarBand for 3+ years now. Too far from switch for DSL, never see cable out where we live. Upload speeds about 50Kbps, download speeds currently 150Kbps, waiting to switch to different satellite (GE4 to AMC6). Should see speeds near 500Kbps. Only goes out during heavy rain. Competitors are Direcway and WildBlue. If you go this route, you want all software on the modem and none on the computer-->difficult to network

thanks for the info. my parents live in the country, and I wondered what was available.

from the company websites, it looks like a couple hundred in startup expenses, and 50 to 100 in monthly rates.

I'm a certified WildBlue installer, I have the service. It works as advertised and the prices are clearly labeled on the website. It's got a bit of a lag time on initital page requests but that will be true of any satellite internet of this kind. Can't change the speed of light. Any specific of techincal questions about the service and i will be happy to answer them.

Call your local rural telephone or electric company, they have the deals on WildBlue (NRTC member)

For normal use of browsing web sites, checking email, etc... most major providers will be fine. For uses such as gaming where latency is critical, you don't want it.
