Cleaning ink jet heads

My Epson 600 is printing very poorly. I tried new ink cartridges and the head cleaning utility. Still prints badly.
I am using only Epson inks. It is used only about once a month, so maybe the ink is all crusted and dried up?

Can I take it apart and use a solvent to clean them? If so, what is recommended? Or is it time for a new printer? this one is about 5 years old.

On an ink printer you should never unplug or disconnect the power.It's okay to switch it off but disconnecting the power on most will cause the ink to dry up faster and clog up.I'm not sure which models this applies to but it's a general rule that works with many.
