View Full Version : Glock 38
Ok I have just about talked myself into ordering a new Glock 38. I have always been a fan of the 45 ACP but don't like Glock's offerings in that caliber. The 45 GAP sounds like the perfect caliber for my needs. The only thing holding me back at this time is not knowing if the round is going to catch on and be around for the long hall. I know that if it does not catch on that reloading is an option. I have reloaded in the past and to be honest I would rather not get back into reloading again. I guess I just need a little reassurance that more then a few of us will find this combination of size and caliber appealing. So please help me spend some money.

I expect the .45GAP to be around for a long time, perhaps longer than the .357Sig. Since it's introduction in September 2003, the following companies offer ammo:
1. Speer
2. Federal
3. Cor-Bon
4. Winchester
5. Remington
There may be more, but you have choices from 185-gr to 230-gr ammo.
My G38, fitted with Ameriglo black target sights, is my most accurate Glock to date.

Don't have my G-38 yet.
Really like my G-37. That has to be the best .45 cal pistol Glock ever created with respect to balance, firepower, and erognomics. Feels like a Glock 1911 to me and holds 10+1 rounds over my 1911's 8+1.
Seems like the manufacturers Danny mentions had a run of 45GAP ammo production and then backed off. (Just my unverified observation) GAP ammo prices bumped up and then some of my regular suppliers were out of stock for a while.
I'm sure ammo supply will balance out over the long haul.
Good luck.

I think the .45 GAP is here to stay. I think we just need to give it some more time and the supplies will be there. Ammo isn't too difficult to find where I live and there is always online sales. The 38 is a great firearm and a pleasure to shoot. I highly recommend buying one.

It's been nearly two years since the .45 GAP was introduced; I think that if it was going to fizzle, it would have by now.
I can see it being around for the duration. The longer it is around, the more people will want to try it out, and when they discover what a truly great cartridge it is, more will join the ranks of us who already love it.
I'm with the posters above. I would find it hard to believe the round would die out now that it has gained some momentum. You have several ammunition and gun manufactures coming out with GAP.
For all those who keep saying the GAP was a "solution to a problem that didn't exist" a recent article in an LE-oriented gunrag really caused me to chuckle. It went into the origins of Bill Wilson's KX45 guns. Short version is some time ago they decided to design a .45 that would be a 10-rounder from the ground up (and a 9-round compact) because they figured the AWB would be forever. The frame? Mostly polymer, and by redesigning the magwell & mags a bit they pulled it off. (Although I know one reliable source who's seen one of these & it's owner never did get it to run right & got rid of it.) So how come it's OK if Wilson does it & it looks like a 1911, but Gaston's all wet? Horsehockey!
Iffy KX45 Compact ~$1400
My "functions w/anything" G38 ~$490.
Having an extra $910 to play with the same .45 caliber premium defensive loads, go to GSSF matches, and do all kinds of other stuff: priceless.

I'm waiting for the P/T GAP. ;W
Well I have now joined you guys. I purchased a Glock 37 instead of the 38. I could not find any 38s around but did find a Glock 23 to check out. I have rather large hands and the 23 was just too small for me. Since the 38 is on the same frame I decided to go with the full size pistol. I will be picking it up Tuesday so I guess I had better get some ammo ordered up for it. Now I need to start looking for a holster for my new toy. Everyone have a great day.
Mike
Mike,
I usually order ammo from www.natchezss.com and be sure to check out the holsters at www.Blade-tech.com
The Blade-tech's are worth the 4 to 6 week wait. I use their OWB, Straight drop, Speed cut Stealth Black holsters for my G37 and G38.

IMO its here to stay!!!
the 37, 38, 39, and the 45 gap have a lot to offer
and everytime you start to think that the 45 gap ammo is expensive or hard to find, just be thankful you arent coughing up the $$$$ trying to feed a 5.7x28
Danny
Thanks for the input. I will check out Natchezss and see about getting some ammo coming. I will be picking the new pistol up on Tuesday after work.

I agree with the posters above as far as the GAP's popularity. Some Law Enforcement Agencies are now adding the 38 & 37 to their approved or issue lists...a good sign for the .45 GAP!

Do it! You will NOT be disappointed. The G38 is fanstanding! That frame is the perfect Glock for my hands, and the GAP round is awesome. I thought the GAP was the stupidest thing ever when I heard it was being released. I had said for years that the 17/22/31 frame should be made to take .45ACP, so I was miffed when I heard of the GAP. After shooting a rental G37 I really liked the cartridge. As soon as the 38 was released I bought one and have not regretted it. I added MeproLights and LOVE it.
The GAP isn't going anywhere...Springfield just released variations of the XD chambered for it and as already stated, L.E. agencies are adding it to the list of acceptable calibers.
200-grain GoldDots are the way to go too!
