View Full Version : Trigger mushy after detail strip

I've detail stripped my G19 before, including the installation of a Scherer 3.5# connector, with no problems. Tonight I did a detail strip, cleaned all the internals, and reassembled the gun. Now the initial trigger take-up is, well, "mushy". It also feels like I can sense everything moving inside, which I've never felt before. The actual trigger break is fine- totally unchanged. I did another full strip, and reassembled it again, with no change. Otherwise, the gun functions perfectly. Unfortunately, I don't like triggers that "talk" to me when in use. Any suggestions?

You didn't say whether you lubed your gun after disassembly and cleaning.
Try a drop of oil at the trigger bar, connector junction. And run a lighty lubed cutip on the top of the trigger bar tab that depresses the firing pin safety. This should smooth things up quite a bit.

Did you remove the trigger spring,if so,make sure that when you reinstall it,it looks like an "S",not a backwards "S".

I second the crucial drop of oil idea if it was missed upon reassembly.

flycaster,
Received this from my friend who saw this thread:
Hiya Eddie:
Would just like to opine that failing to lube the connector/trigger bar mating surfaces MIGHT be the guy's problem; however, if the firing pin safety spring is incorrectly installed and is binding in its channel, take-up will most definitely be adversely affected.
Cordially,
W.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies so far. I did lightly lube internally as suggested. Eddie C.- I didn't mess with the trigger spring. Good thought, though.
Here's more detail: the first trigger take-up is easy, and light, to the first "stop". From that point until the stop before the gun fires, is spongy. If I fire from reset instead of the full trigger pull, it's fine. Is this any help?

Please realize that he wasn't referring to the trigger spring but rather the firing pin safety spring. If you take off your slide, you'll see a silver "button" that is the firing pin safety. The spring that's housed beneath it was the referenced one.
See #9 and #10 on the following drawing(edited to add):

Oops- you're right, of course. In this case, I hadn't disassembled the slide, only the frame. So, I didn't go near the firing pin safety spring.

Did you by any chance straighten the connector? It's supposed to stick out from the trigger housing at the top of the connector.

It's textbook, Danny. The reality for me is that I'm not likely to even notice the change during competition. If I can find the cause, and can correct it, great. If not, I'll still be shooting it.

that's exactly how both my new glocks feel, and i never detail stripped anything. that's normal, at least according to my glocks.

Maybe it's me? Could be!

My G31C feels the same as you describe. Light at first then starts to get heavy just before it breaks.
This is what some people call "stacking" What is happening is as you pull back on the trigger you are compressing the firing pin spring slightly just before the trigger bar drops below the firing pin. The more you compress the firing pin spring the more resistance you will feel, The further back you pull the trigger the heavier it will get untill the trigger bar drops low enough to release the firing pin.
I can't explain why you feel this now and not before.
