My sister in law just had me replace the power steering/AC serpentine belt on her 99 Mitsubishi Galant this evening, the old one was loose and not driving the power steering pump properly.

Was fairly easy to replace, loosen the tension pulley, route the new belt and tighten the pulley back up. Did it twice, as soon as she would start the car, when the engine "jumped" after initially turning over, the belt would pop right off.

I don't have a manual for this car, the only reason she brought it to me is cause I'm the only male in the family. I told her she just needs to pony up the $30 bucks or whatever to have a shop replace it; but I'm curious what could be making the new belt not stay on.

Any ideas? Thanks...

New pump is/may not be aligned 100% correctly. That usually will cause the belt to jump off.

Look for the belt routung diagram decal. Sounds like one pully is reversed, or spinning backward.
