I'm leaning towards making my first AR the RRA Elite CAR A4.
Since I'm not going to have a budget to buy any fancy optics for awhile, I think I'll get it with the standard carry handle.
I'd love to see pictures of your AR if you have the RRA Elite CAR A4...especially if it has a standard carry handle instead of the "detachable tactical carry handle," as shown on RRAs website.
Tell me what you think of your RRA, and let me know if this is the best choice for a carry handle setup for a guy who wants to keep-it-simple.
Thanks! :)

Well, seeing as no one has answered you yet, I thought I'd throw in my .02 cents.
Rock River Arms has a good reputation for manefacturing AR's and 1911's. As far as wanting to see that particular model with an A2 upper reciever I'm guessing you'll just have to use your imagination. The looks between a A2 carry handle and a removable handle is minimal. The opening on the removable handle is smaller than the A2's but other than that they are pretty much the same.
Is there a price difference between the A2 and A3 set-up? Usually there isn't. Even if you don't plan of getting any optics now, at least the A3 (removable handle setup) gives you the option later.
I wanted to "keep things simple" for my 3rd AR build too: a basic rifle with no fancy electronic sights or gadgets hanging off the fore end. Even if I wanted to keep it simple however I did opt to get an A3 upper, just in case later on down the road I decided to change things up a bit. Hope this helped.

Go with the A3.

Thanks. I plan on getting a model with the detachable carry handle on the upper. I will probably want to add optics later on, but I know that it won't be an immediate thing.
I assume the "Standard Carry Handle" I found here is the A3 handle you mentioned:
Eagle Firearms (past half way down page) (http://www.eaglefirearms.net/Rock%20River%20Arms%20Rifles.htm)
And you're right, the A3 handle does appear to have a slightly smaller opening. Does it still serve as an effective carry handle? I do have thinner fingers. Thanks!

A3 and A4 pretty much mean the same thing in civilian terms. It refers to the flattop upper.
The detachable carry handle and the tactical deatchable carry handle are neither really meant to be used as a carry handle really, but esspecially in the case of the tactical carry handle.

Well dangit. ;Q
Basically I like the idea of having a carry handle on top that can be removed for optics later, but then again, if the standard carry handle isn't really going to be used as a carry handle, should I look into a midlength like the Elite CAR UTE2 ? That way, there would be a solid rear sight no matter what.
I guess I'm sold on the 16" midlength. Now I just need to decide what type of upper/carry handle setup would work best for me.
What types of optics work well with the UTE style RRA? I suppose a carry handle isn't a necessity, but I liked the idea of a sturdy rear sight on the detachable carry handle. The UTE setup gives that as well, but with no carry handle.
(Forgive my newbie-ness. I wish RRAs were like Glocks at my local gun dealer...you can handle all of them in store. I've got to make the best decision for my needs without handling a RRA at all.) ;g
Thoughts?

Ok J~
Well personally I don't like the "Chopped" A2 style recivers. I wold rather have either a complete A2 or a totally flat A3.

What optics work with the RRA Elite CAR UTE2?
Is there an advantage of the UTE2 over the Elite CAR A4? Or is it the other way around?
I noticed that most places charge less for the UTE2 models.

Jaltered,
You're looking at great rifles. In fact, I'm looking to get one of the mid-length RRAs as well. Both the UTE2 and the CAR A4 are awesome. It's just going to be up to your personal preference to decide which is for you. I personally want mine to look just like a regular removeable AR carry handle, so I'll get the CAR A4 with a full-size removeable carry handle (hopefully I can buy it from somewhere that will just swap them out, rather than me have to buy the "chopped" carry handle "with tac mount", which seems to come standard on the CAR A4.
Please read this thread on the Lightfighter board about the UTE2. USMC03 (he's on GT too) owns this rifle and did an awesome job with it (actually, he had ADCO do most of the work, but the setup is gorgeous). This is what I want my mid-length to look like.

Our elite is in the attached picture to the far right. I'm very happy with the 1 in 8 stainless barrel, but I'm less thrilled with the Surefire midlength handguard. If I could buy this one again, I'd get the RRA factory-installed floating quad rail midlength handguard instead.

definitly get the car elite no carry handle, dont get te UTE. it limits your optic options.

Well, the only optics I'd mount on ANY AR anyways would be an EOTech or Aimpoint. It IS going to be a SHTF carbine after all. I'm not going to mount a hunting scope on the thing. :)
Rock River told me over the phone that those both mount on the UTE2 upper with no problems.
Plus, I like that the rear sight will be as sturdy as the rest of the gun, so I am currently still leaning towards the UTE2 as my first AR. It's also cheaper and more available.

ok well if you arent going to do any of that then the UTE is fine. It does offer a very sturdy whereas it also offers a flattop.
I personally like a flat line of sight, without my buis being up all the time. (that is why i bought the troy flip up rear sight)which is also, very very sturdy. If you break that off, you are going to break the top rail off with it.
