Need help!

I am relatively unfamiliar with the AR.

I bought a new Colt 6920 LE Carbine and took about to cleaning and lubing it from the new greased-up, in-the-box condition.

After I struggled with putting the trigger back together, I noticed a small brass colored piece that looked like a miniature 1/4 scale .22 shell.

I don't know where it's home is.

I will consult my owner's manual, but I thought you could help if you wanted to.

Does this go somewhere in my rifle?

That is not ringing a bell. It would be best if there was a picture.

The part you have described is the safety selector detent.
Did your gun come with a manual?
The detent goes in a hole in the lower receiver that is covered by the pistol grip. There is a spring that should be there as well.

There's really no need to detail strip your rifle to that level...It was one of my pet peeves with my soldiers...they thought it was great to take the dang thing apart...which is why selector switches would freely rotate, and push pins would fall out, and buffers would sproing out of guns...
