View Full Version : My New "Beater"

I had a yellow Cav lower, but never did anything with it. It was the older model, so I upgraded to the new MkII version in OD green.
I found a cheap upper that had been given the homemade camo treatment (which has been removed); I wanted a pencil barrel to have a superlight carbine "truck gun" but this one had to do because of the price. It is a no name jobbie with HBAR under the handguards.
Anyway, here she is. Now, when I want to strap a rifle to a four-wheeler rack, or toss it in back of a Kawasaki Mule, I can go it with no regrest.
Without further adieu...

Hey, as long as it goes bang that's the important part.

I'm building a sort of a beater AR as well.
Your's looks good. I bet the grip feels much better on those CAV lowers with something like what you have on there...
Any idea what she weighs?

How much $ do you have in your beater then?

I don't doubt it. Those CAV lowers can be had for pretty cheap. I've thought about getting one. Maybe I will, and get a different grip on it, kinda like you have.

Y'know, this is a darn good idea. I've got a Bushy 20" upper sitting around my house. There is a gun show in Orlando this weekend, maybe I'll see if I can find a inexpensive lower. I've also got a stock that I'm not using. So, if I can find a cheap lower, AR15.com often has some pretty inexpensive lower parts kits.
I could get me a beater too!

Man, the problems I had today...
Took the beater out and gave it a whirl. Bad news.
I took the Oralite mag above because it was already in the rifle -- mistake. Plastic mags and plastic gun does not work. I could insert the mag, whiggle and pull a bit, and it would come right out. While shooting, I was lucky to have it stay in for three consecutive rounds.
Beta mag -- same problem on occasion, but not as bad.
Then, there were the extraction issues. The bolt I have is a well used one, and I came to find that the extractor spring is super weak. The extractor could be replaced as well. I was getting FTE many times; a new round would chamber and the spent case would get lodged on b/t the fresh round and the inside of the ejection port. Bad news.
I tried my buddy's new BCG, and it worked better. This was done w/ USGI 20 rounders.
Then, a new problem arose. Somehow, my gas tube got bent down and over. This must have been from a lodged round and my trying to pry it out.
So, now to Brownells I go. New gas tube, extractor, and extractor spring. After this, hopefully it'll run right.

A quality bolt and BC is critical to reliability. I'd consider buying a better one, preferably new. Eaglefirearms has complete BCG's for $110 I believe.

No need for a new one, this is a complete Colt. Just need some new parts for it... ;f
