Building a new computer?

Well, as I'm sure some of you read in one of my posts, my moms computer bit the dust and it wasn't just the HDD after all, so I was just going to buy her one of those new cheaper dells but as I have found out, the catch is extremely high shipping that still brings the price up, or you can go with one of the mid level for the same price with free shipping. So I figure since my current computer, although a year old, is still pretty damn good even for today's standards I'll just give that to her, she only uses the computer for net, emails, and word processing so that should last her at least another 3 years. So that now gives me an excuse to finally build a computer lol. So here's the list of components I've chosen, so I'm just looking for suggestions as or comments, like to see if anything I've chosen conflicts, this is my first time building so I know I have the main stuff needed, just not sure if everything is compatible but I did my best in making sure.

i notice you have a sound card listed, are you reusing speakers?

also, you have a 64-bit processor; are you sure you don't want windows 64-bit edition? (note: i don't even know how much more it costs or if it's even better; just want to make sure you at least considered it). eta: nevermind, it's 60 dollars more.:(

i didnt even see the 64 bit edition of windows, whats the difference? and yea, i just bought some Logitech speakers a week before all this happened so i'm just going to keep those.

you've got a pretty powerful system spec-ed out. The hard drive has a 2 meg cache. That's pretty small, but not incompatible. Just something else you may want to consider.

8mb of cash is what u should get.

Look at this hard drive. It is SATA though so you will need a SATA conetion on the mother board.

Probley one of the fastest Harddrives on the market. That is in a good price range.


Also look at a heat pipe for the CPU not a the stock AL heat sink that will get heat soaked very fast.

I am running a hyper7 and depending on room tempeture the cpu sits at 24c-29c under full load it might get to 32c

A SATA drive is worth the few extra bucks. The increase in drive access speed is very noticeable, and if you've ever built a computer before you will LOVE the skinny SATA connection wires instead of ribbon cables. 200GB is about the sweet spot in hard drive pricing right now. Any bigger and the price starts jumping pretty fast.

Edit: Definitely go with 8MB cache and 7200RPM. It's worth it, just as SATA is.

You better re-think your power supply choice.

You're spending alot of money on a great system and buying a marginal power supply.

Get a name brand (Enermax, Antec, or my favorite OCZ) power supply with at least 25 amps on the 12V rail.

Far too many people neglect the power supply when choosing components and just opt to get one that has the highest wattage with the cheapest price.

spend a little more and get a quality PS.
