View Full Version : 1911 Shooter wanting a G21 Q's
Hey all,
I am currently a 1911 shooter. I have a G17 and love it, but I am thinking of getting a G21. I am setup for 45ACP having tons of ammo and reloading supplies. How will the G21 compare to the 1911? Maybe that was a dumb question. Has anyone been a predominately 1911 shooter and purchased a G21 on a whim?
Thanks guys.
Kansas huh, Missouri here, your neighbor. I have a friend that I shoot with every Saturday night and he shoots mostly 1911's or revolvers with tricked out action jobs. He has had his 21 since the early 90's and just found out that it had a broken ejector. I took it apart to install a 3.5lb connector and noticed this. He has shot 1000's of rounds thru it and never had a problem, I even think it came from the factory this way as it does not even look as if it broke off, just came from the factory this way. At any rate, he is gettin a new one that I will install and even though he is a die-hard 1911 guy he gives alot of respect to his Glocks.

I've had my 21 longer than any other model I've owned. It has approximately 7K through it of all kinds of ammo from S&B to military ball to Hornady TAP. It has had ONE malfunction and that turned out to be a bad primer, not the pistol. It is utterly reliable, soft-shooting and very accurate. It is currently pulling duty as the go-to home defense handgun with an M3 attached. Go for it, you won't regret it.:)

Once you get used to the grip and the grip angle of the G21, you will probably find yourself ignoring your 1911's more and more. The G21 has to be the softest shooting .45 ACP I have ever shot. Mostly do to the large handle, and the low bore axis...
I love all 5 of mine!
I have never experienced a malfunction in my G21, and I have shot a lot of different ammo. It is accurate, soft shooting, and lightweight. And it holds 13+1 rounds. ;f ;c

A few years ago, I had five 1911s and zero Glocks. Now, I have ten (or is it eleven?) Glocks and two 1911s. There are three G21s in my collection.
The Glock trigger is very different from that of a 1911. Some 1911 shooters just can't used to it--which is how I came by my third G21, the only second generation Glock I own and the only used Glock I've bought. The G21's grip is way different from a single-stack 1911, but not quite so different if you've used double-stack 1911s, such as Para-Ordnance. If you can get past those two hurdles, the G21 is one fine pistol.

My first Glock was a 21c when the 3rd generation first came out. I put around 7 or 8 thousand rounds thru it without changing any parts and using the original mags. For reliability you can't beat it. I also found it to be very accurate, and I naturally shot well with it. I used to shoot bowling pins at 100 yards (okay, I missed a lot too).
Since then I acquired a Kimber Gold Match (series 1) and had a trigger job done on it. It shoots like a dream and is also very accurate. Speed wise, when I shoot steel plates they are the same. They both have pretty short resets. As it's been mentioned, the triggers and the grips are night and day, so it will take some getting used to. If you have large hands you will be fine.
Bottom line is I highly recommend getting a Glock 21 as a compliment to your 1911's. Think of it as a true work horse that can take any abuse you can toss it's way.
I went from the 1911 to the G30, which is just a short-grip/short-barrel G21, and eventually sold my 1911 because I was so fond of the Glock. Learn about all the trigger and spring options, and for not many dollars you can make your Glock feel the way you like it.
I forgot to mention, I LOVE MY 30. I have shot a 21 but found the 30 was best of both worlds, for me at least.
The 21 has got a following, for good reason. The only thing people complain about is the grip size. I have large hands and love big grips, so the 21 was a natural choice for me. Rented it just to see and then came back a few days later to buy one. It's a glock, so the grip angle and trigger is the same as the others, but it is the largest frame they make. I have also noticed that the 21 has VERY few problems even for a glock. I don't think I have seen a thread on here with someone complaining about a malfunctioning G21 that wasn't their own fault (either by limp wristing, or by using crappy aftermarket items that make the gun malfunction). I think a lot of it has to do with the G21 is the same frame and almost the same upper as a G20, so it was designed to handle a 10mm, but shoots a low pressure .45. If I am not mistaken that is the same thing with the Ruger P90 (designed for 10mm, but shoots .45) and everyone admits those things are tanks.
It's a great .45 IMO, and because of my large hands, I prefer it to a G30.
Oh another , but not so carry friendly, option for you is the CZ-97. I got one of those recently and LOVE it. That thing is dead-on accurate.
Both great .45s and I do not plan on getting rid of either.
+1 on them being totally different guns. about the only things they have in common are the caliber, and a consistent shot-to-shot trigger pull. oh, and they are both sweet shooting.
personally I don't find the recoil to be terribly different from my full-size 1911.
also while I find the grip to be large I don't find it to be uncomfortable or unwieldy. just different.

I was at the range today with my Glock's and their was a S&W 1911 shooter their who offered to let me shoot his .45 after we discused the S&W1911 and my G21. So of course I returned the favor by loading 13 round into my G21 and let him have a go at it while I shot his S&W1911. When I finished and he was half way finished with my G21 he looked at me and said "it shoots at point of aim" then he continued till he emptied the mag. He said he thought he was never going to empty the mag, most likely because he was use to the S&W single stack which holds only 7 rounds. He then proceeded to say that he could be talked into buying a Glock .45acp. I guess he liked it.
Oh ya, he maid the point of aim comment because he was wearing out the center of the target!! From what I witnessed he was more accurate with the G21.
Since I started this post, I did not pick up the G21. I picked up a G30 instead! ;f
I also picked up a G23 a couple days later. ;f
I guess I caught the bug!
You still need a 21 and a 36. You wont be disapointed!
Way to go!!! You'll love that 30 and probably wil;l wind up getting the 21 too. I'm thinking about a 34 now days.

y es, I like my glocks, all eleven of them. the 21/30 is my carry gun. I cut the grip frame of my 21 down to a 30 grip frame and use the ten round magazine I can also use my 13 round as a back up this way the grip does not print on my waist I also use my 36 glock as my pocket gun works for me.
