View Full Version : Buis????
Hello everybody!!
I am in the process of ordering my first AR-15! I have decided on the RRA entry tactical, the 1251 NT. After speaking with the dealer i have decided on holding off on buying the Eotech becuase i want to learn without it first. He told me he can get me an ARMS 40l sight for $99.00. WHat is your guys take on that sight? would i need anything else? is the price good??
Thanks!

You can get them cheaper than that online.
Try www.eaglefirearms.net or you could get one slightly used on ar15.com. I've seen them sell slightly used on there for $70.

Haven't heard anything bad about them.
Personally, I have a Troy BUIS from Bravocompanyusa.com on the way:

You won't go wrong with the ARMS #40. I may be wrong but I would think that if you did get the 40L and later added the Eotech, you could only "co-witness" through the bottom third of the Eotech. Thats not a bad thing but personaly I like an absolute co-witness which you could achieve with the standard 40.

I said they are good. I am happy with mine. Some folks like the Troy BUIS better. They cost more but I hear crappy stuff about their customer service.
You'd be happy with an ARMS #40. They co-witness just fine with optics.

I have a 40L and an EoTech 511. They co-witness just fine. And on-topic, I like my 40L, it seems to do everything a BUIS needs to do.
Glad to hear you made the decision to master iron sights prior to getting optics. That's the sane choice.
Since you are going to buy it you are not bound to your dealer's choice of BUIS at full retail price. I run an Eotech on my AR also. Its excellent.
There are two basic types of BUIS.
First are the Flip-ups. As the name implies they can be flipped up to use and flipped down to store when not in use. Examples of these are the excellent Troy's and the ARMS.
Second are the fixed BUIS. They are fixed in place and except for windage and perhaps elevation there is nothing that moves. Examples of this type of BUIS are the excellent LMT and LaRue fixed BUIS. They are more rugged in design.
The Marines and Army use the Fixed types of BUIS's. That is not to say the flip-ups are fragile, they are not.
Go over to www.ar15.com to the AR forum and read about each. Any of those mentioned so far on this thread will work fine, its just a matter of personal preference.
Previous posters like the flip-ups. I like the fixed.
Good Luck.

Just curious, does it co-witness in the lower third of the optic or is it centered in the optic? I know the standard 40 will be centered but I would think the 40L (low profile) would be at the lower third, but I may be wrong.

Co-witnesses directly in the middle of the optic. It's lower profile than the #40 before it pops up. I believe it's the same height after it pops up.

Ahhh... Ok ;)
Thanks for the information everyone!! I guess i will be getting the 40L. I checked eaglefirearms but it was the same price, also i dont know if its hard to install but he will be doing it for me.
What do you guys mean when you say co-witness??? will the 40L be a problem or not becuase different people are saying different things. Thanks

As long as he is not charging you to install then just let him, but no it's not hard at all. If you can tighten a bolt, then you can install it.
You mentioned you may get the Eotech later on, if so, it will then become your primary optic and the irons will be your BUIS. To co-witness, means that if your Eotech ever failed (thinking in if the SHTF terms) you could flip up your rear iron and still see your front post through the Eotech without having to change your sight plane.
The 40L will work just fine. I was confused in thinking the 40L sat lower on the flattop while opened but according to SomeGuyinaHat it is only lower profile while folded. So yes it will work fine.

I tried a lot of flip-up BUIS’s & ended up choosing the Midwest Industries (MI) BUIS over all of the A.R.M.S. BUIS’s.
I have however sense seen the light & like Sierra now use a fixed BUIS. I chose the LaRue.

Michigun,
I too like the fixed rear sights.
I was wondering if that rear sight is sitting all the way back? It looks a little farther forward than where an A2 rear sight sits.

It is sitting in the very last notch on my upper like it's supposed to.

It's mostly just a difference in looks between the 2, but the LaRue BUIS does sit just a hair farther forward -vs- where a A2-like rear sight sits, both in sight body & in aperture location... here's an example picture which shows it a little worst then it actually is in real-life:

I have to admit that both of those are so good I bought one of each and couldn't be happier.

One sits canted ( very bad ) and the other one sideways ( bad )!
Do the companies don´t know the specs of a Picatinny rail so AFTER tightening the sights look centered???
H
Arminius,
Are you meaning that the A2/LMT sight is canted? If so most A2 type rear sights are canted somewhat due to the spring pressure on them. If your tolerance was so tight that it wasn't it would be difficult to adjust for elevation.
The other one looking sideways is the camera angle.
