I'm trying to clean up and update a friends computer. All I want to do now is upgrade to service pack 2.

But no.

I'm having to go through all this winblows updater bull****, and even still, there is no link or place to download/install service pack 2.

Give me a link to a file, let me download the damn thing, and then I'll install it.

How the hell do I get this comp upgraded to SP2????

PS- This is why I'm still running 2kpro, and sure as hell won't be using XP in the future. Penguin, here I come.

Using the windows update feature is seamless and fairely painless, as long as one has a valid copy of WinXP you shouldn't have any problems at all.

Good stuff DC, your typical deluge of links is helpful once again.

I agree thx for the link DC.

I will burn it to CD so i have it in the future. Sme peoples PCs i work on have dial up, downloading updates is not an option.

This update resolves a compatibility issue with a non-Microsoft software application installed on your computer. This application prevents successful installation of Windows XP Service Packs, critical security updates and other system file updates. This update should be applied to your system to enable safe installation of these updates now and in the future.

I have used the SP2 standalone installer ever since it was discovered that antivirus apps, spywarte or certain running processes could b0rk the SP2 install when done through M$ Update.

I run it in Safe Mode on older SP1 installs, too, so the excess dross is not running and interfering with the SP2 setup.

If you can't type "Windows XP service pack 2" into Google and click the first search result, then good luck on the Linux install.

All of which lead back to windows update, or the 275 meg downloadable with the disclaimer not to use it for single computer upgrades. I should have known microsoft would try to pull something like that and just went that route to begin with.

It works fine for single computer use. It's a big download. With broadband it's not too bad.I find it works better than the "Express Install".Make sure everything is clean of viruses and spyware.Clean up space and defrag before installing SP2.SP2 is more than an update,it's more of an OS upgrade.

It's a good idea to defrag after installing SP2 too.SP2 does require more resouces so you might want to consider how much memory and CPU speed the PC has before installing SP2.
