I'm past ready to buy one of these just from reading GT. The question I want to ask is how much fooling around do you have to do to maintain this gun? It sounds as if it might involve constant tinkering. How much detailed cleaning and checking of parts (firing pin etc.) is involved. Ashamed to say, I've grown a bit lazy.
Thanks

Get it "right" in the beginning (properly cleaned/oiled) and then just shoot it. Regualar maintenance, just like any other pistol, is all that's needed. The Makarov only has 27 moving parts, and those are built to last a lifetime, so no tinkering needed.

As pistols go the Makarov is a tank, not a sports car.

When you are finished shooting, run a oily patch through the bore, wipe a little crud off the insides, put a little oil on the moving parts, wipe the outside with an oily rag, give it a good cleaning once in a while.

Or give it a good cleaning after every shoot session, it really makes no difference.

Your grand children will still be shooting the gun long after you're gone.:)

Good analogy. That's all I wanted to hear. I have no problem breaking it down after shooting it, and a family dinner will cost more than the gun itself I just don't want to spend the time getting real intimate with it.
I spent a lot of time last night and this morning reading all the sites you people posted. I have a 9mm Polish Radom and a 7.65 French "Unique" that were my Father-In-Laws take outs from WWII but I've just cleaned and oiled them. This gun I'll use.
M2 Carbine, the truth be known, I'm getting this gun based pretty much on your recommendation. Don't ask my why other then a gut feeling you know what your talking about.
Time will tell:)

It's getting to where I have more guns than I care to clean.

Any of my revolvers takes more time just to clean than it does to detail strip AND clean the Makarov.

I think you will enjoy it.

A friend and I usually shoot several different pistols on my range. We usually also have a Makarov or two.

As he almost always says after shooting the Mak, "It's just hard to beat a Makarov".:)

Just got home from a gun show. I saw a Bulg. with 2 mags a another set of grips for $169.95 + 6% tax. Went to see if I could find ammo and bought 2 boxes of B. Bear 92g, B Bear 115 gr. HP, and 2 Fioccha 95 gr. On the way back to get the gun, I stopped at another booth and the dealer (big exhibit) said he'd order me a "new Bulgie" for $160. Said it would take a couple of days. He also said he had a Chinese model back at the store. I didn't get a price on that one. I'm going to call his store Tues. and get it. Anything special I should ask???

IMHO stay away from the new Maks and find a good surplus find a good surplus one. At least stay away from the commercial ones with the adjustable sights. But I am a traditionalist and like guns the way they were intended to be, not the commercial versions.

Buy the Mak and love it. I've owned 2-3 over the years and sold/traded them (don't know why). I'm on my second love-affair with the Makarov and I think this time I'm in it for good.

I've bought and sold Keltec, Beretta, Sig .380's, Bersa, AMT, and now I'm back to Mak.

Once you go Mak, you'll never go back!

By new I meant never been issued or excellent condition.
I have spent many hours and have come up with 7 or 8 I'm probably going to deal with. I'm suppose to get a call from www.mac-tecmilitary arms.com today. I expect to have at least one this week. Ever hear of mac-tec?

Let me be another in a long line to say once you shoot your Mak you'll love it. The recoil is minimal. The DA pull is steady and the SA is a dream to shoot. You can rip off nine shots in no time and still be on target with each shot. I wouldn't trade my Bulgies for anything. Let us know how you like it.
