View Full Version : Kelly McCann & the 9mm or .40
I know that Kelly McCann has always had his trusty G19. It looks like a Gen II with bicycle tire tube rubber wrapped for a grip (something he mentioned that he does on the Tactical Carbine video). Anyone else konw the goodies he has on it (springs, trigger pull, etc)?
I have a G27 as my first and only Glock. I have a decent shot placement as possible with it. But I'm now reconsidering about going up to the midframe size and also to the 9mm (i.e. the G19). Without starting a flame war, I'd like to get some opinions between the two.
My primary purpose is to have it as my main weapon (CCW, range, etc). I'm trying to improve my technique by reducing muzzle flip and increasing target reaquisition speed, but want to be practical with a gun that may be a little less squirrelly as compared to my G27. Having a good 3 finger grip is important too, but I can get a get an A&G extension grip (http://www.lonewolfdist.com/stockdetail.asp?item=AG-1923) to compenstate for that.
I've also read many suggestions about using a 3.5# with the NY1 trigger to smooth things out. My 27 is very stock right now.
A friend and co-worker on my platoon trained with McCann and the GungHo Chuan crew for about three years in the mid-late 90's. He also served in the Corps with McCann. From this friend, (remember this is second hand info.) Kelly used a stock G19 with nightsites and about zero finish left on the gun. Supposedly everything else is stock.
My buddy added that the Kelly McCann you see in the videos is exactly as he is in real life: ferocious.
I hope this helps.

I know I sound like a broken record. Take a look at Double Tap's new line of 9MM ammo. The ballistics are impressive, and I have a feeling that the recoil will be quite maneageable.
I have a G17 and G26 in 9MM at present, plus a G20 for the woods. I carry Georgia Arms' Shear Power Plus 124-grain +P ammo. It has a little bark, but the recoil is VERY maneageable IMO. Keep in mind, this is very similar to the factory version that we hear about NYPD carrying. If it's good enough for them, it should be fine for us. And with the Double Tap version you get an even faster bullet.
You might want to think about keeping the G27 if you can afford to, practicing with it using Miwall reloads (they're a bit light as far as .40 goes, but perfect for this application), staying in the habit of dealing with recoil that's a little more harsh than you will actually carry, and toting the G26. I'm looking at adding a G22 for this same reason, among other things.

I own Glocks in 3 calibers. Some recent testing I have done shows me that the 9mm Glocks are the way to go, for me.
Out of all my Glocks my speed from holster to 1st round on target are about the same. It is all the follow up shots that have me convinced to stick with 9mm.
This suprised me as I shoot the G22 in competition, and I don't do to bad with that.
Shot placement is the key. Being able to put several rounds accuratly into the target as quick as possible is the goal..
I have his "Inside the Crucible" series and it looks to me as if he has some sort of holographic rear site on the G19...almost like an Eotech for a handgun. At least, that's how it looks.
Go with the G23.
That way you can have a three caliber gun at your option.

The holographic sight on his G19 is a Dr. Optics sight.

I just went shooting this past weekend and tested my sighted shooting with my G27. I found that I can put consistently put rounds in a two inch square at 15 feet. At 30 feet, it goes to crap with about 98% in a 6 inch square. Maybe I just need more practice.
I know that the G27 is a bit squirrely, but it was a little frustrating to see quite a difference.

After reading your initial post I would say you already know what to do. Get the G19 or better yet get a G26 for CCW then some G19 or G17 mags for the range/backup.
Also the trigger setup you referred to (#3.5 connector, NY1 spring) is on all my Glocks and as far as I'm concerned is the best a Glock trigger can get. Smooth even pull with a surprise break. I also prefer the smooth trigger so I switch out the serrated triggers.

A polished 3.5# connector with an 8#(olive)spring is my favorite combo for all of my Glocks.
My guess is that Kelly McCann shoots his G19 well because he shoots it a LOT!
I like the G19 and it should serve you well. But buying the same gun as Kelly McCann or Jerry Miculek or Rod Leatham isn't going to make you a faster/better shooter.
Proper practice and training will make you a better shooter.

Definitely not. But it does remove two big obstacles: recoil and cost of practice ammo, thus allowing you to spend time on skill.

I have tested a G17 against G22, and G26 against G27. I kept going to the range with the idea of buying Glock 40s for self defense. BUT: every time I came home dedicated to the 9mm. Its just so much easier to shoot fast, with accuracy. And that includes one-handed strong and weak hand.
Fast, accurate hits means way more to me than "more power".
Not arguing either of those points. I am a fan of the G19, I own one, and don't own a G27.
I think way too often us Americans look for a hardware solution to a software problem.
If he took the $550-600 he'd spend on a new Glock 19 and instead bought a case of ammo and a couple day training class he would end up shooting his G27 much much better.
I think our time would be better spent mastering the guns we have rather than endlessly searching for a better gun. (you can tell I'd never last very long as a salesman in a gun store)
