View Full Version : Hogue Rubber Forends
Does anyone have one of those hogue overmolded free float tubes on ther rifle? Was it hard to install and are they any good? Any one that has any experience first hand or otherwise, it would be great to hear your opinions. Thanks

IIRC, that rubber piece is just a slip over piece of rubber.
I had one. Came on a rifle I bought. I sure as hell wouldn't pay for one. Ain't worth it captain!

Never had one, but in order to install it.......
1. Remove hanguards
2. remove front sight tower by punching out the pins.
3. Remove gas tube
4. Remove barrel nut
5. Screw on free float handguards
6. Line up holes in free float handguard with gas tube hole
7. Reinstall front sight tower

Obviously, I was confused and was taking about the rubber Hogue slip-over that goes on existing free-float tubes. Sorry!
found one for $40 at a funshow so i put it on the wife's bushy. easy install once you get the FSB off. functionally sound IMO but not the most handsome thing around. no provision for mounting a bipod. still (fruitlessly) trying to rectify that. i do like the o'mold PG alot.

I drilled a hole and screwed in a sling stud, then just got Harris that attaches to that stud.
Another thing you could do is mount a rail with some screws and then use a Harris with the QD ARMS mount.

did that too but the stud popped out after little use. i put it on a bit too far forward also IMO. haven't found one yet long enough to secure from the other side but i plan on doing that or the rail section w/bipod adaptor.

getting a railed forearm just seems like overkill since all i want is a bipod on the bottom. anyone know if the DCM FFs still accept the under-HG rail segments? that's another idea i've kicked around. wonder how they look with a non-standard gas block.
sorry for the threadjack Ridx

I suggest getting a Harris #5 bipod adapter (normmally used for the standard round AR handguards). Locate and drill the hole for the stud, slip the backing plate into the handguard tube from the front, and hold it in place with a flat stick (ruler?) until you get the stud's screw started into the backing plate's nut. As you tighten it up, the long backing plate will lay in the bottom of the handguard's curve, preventing it from spinning as you snug it down tight. You WILL NOT be able to pull this one out. :)
If you are mounting the stud near the front sight base/gas block, make sure you have enough clearance for the backing plate before drilling (slide it in and check with a flashlight). Some thicker float tubes (the Hougue may be one of them) may not allow enough room for the backing plate directly under the FSB/gas block.
