View Full Version : Want to build a large frame USPSA open gun
I have a 20C that is modified for USPSA Limited class, using a .40S&W chambered barrel. The lower has been modified to a point that I don't want to fool with it, I like it just the way it is. I want to use this G20 lower and possibly build the upper out of parts that would enable me to compete in Open class. I was thinking the following:
6" long slide/ported
6" long barrel chambered in .40S&W/ported
some brand of red dot sight
Any information that anyone is willing to give on this is very much appreciated. I want to stick with the .40 S&W cartridge just for ease of reloading since I am already set-up for that shooting in Limited class. I also don't want to buy the G35 or G24 as I prefer the feel of the larger frame.
Thanks everyone

Carver mount/c-more sight combo is a great dot setup.

You have two basic ways to go.......
You can go with a 6" G21 slide such as the one Lone Wolf and we offer, using a 6" 40cal barrel. Then we can cut a window in the top of the slide (ala G34/35) and port the barrel. Or you can use a standard length G20/21 slide, use a 5" 40 cal barrel, and a threaded on comp. Actually there is one other way and that is use a standard length G20/21 slide and a hybrid barrel, with or without a comp.
For a scope I would recommend the JPoint. We have installed a lot of them with very good results, especially low mounted on the Glocks.

Going with the .40 in a G20 is a good idea. Our team experienced much frustration in using the 10MM case, as we had several hangups on ejection. The Israli made "Tac" mount is a fair setup, I prefer it to the others as it tends to "flex" with the frame, being made of a similar polymer. We never experienced a loss of zero with this mount & used it with various optics, including a 1st gen Halosight, the heavy version that uses "aa" size batteries.
If you want to spend a LOT more, for a mount that isn't any lower, Carver's is built like a tank. I don't think you could hurt a Carver without destroying the gun it's attached to!
In using a G20 w/a .40 barrel, it works better for reliability to load the ammo long. We load to full 10MM length, as the mags work better. This also frees up more space for the powder & gives you the option of using 200gr bullets if so desired. We shoot 180gr Precision Bullets (when we can get them) using VhitaVouri N 320 powder. Quick burn, crisp slide action & gentle recoil. And no signs of excess pressure. Try sticking with Federal brass, it seems to be a little stronger/tougher than most others. We usually lose it before we wear it out.
good luck !

Sorry 'bout that....
After lightly opening the chamber (like .002") for reliable feeding with reloads, all 3 of the guns are now setup with KKM barrels. tried more than our share of things out there, & you wouldn't go wrong with a Bar-Sto either.
The KKM chamber was tight enough for a bullseye gun. Not quite what you need for USPSA/IPSC !
