Yesterday, I decided to play hooky and go to the range for some trigger time behind my Frankenstein CAR-15. It has an Olympic Arms lower and Bushmaster upper with lightweight 16-inch barrel, Swan sleeve with pop-up iron sights, and is topped with an Aimpoint.
I was shooting those LC 55-grain FMJ rejects from the bench unsupported. The 20 x 20-inch gong at 300 yards was no problem. I could hit those pretty consistently. But it took me three shots to finally connect with the 8-inch plate. I managed to hit it a seconf time after another 6 shots.
To put things in perspective, with the dot turned down as dim as possible where it is still usefull, it still covers most of that plate. Plus, the plate itself was painted orange which blended in with the dot nicely.
So needless to say, I am very pleased with this rifle and that I have no doubt that I can effectively engage a BG with it out to 300 yards. Now if I can only convince the Sheriff to let us qualify with it. ;f

Well seein as how everyone has sub-moa ARs, or so it seems, that doesn't seem like much of a challange at all. If your gun shoots half as well as most people here claim there's will you should be getting 2" groups at 300 yards...;Q
Seriously though, ya done good considering the ammo and I'd put money that's a darn bit better than most people could muster at 300 yards with a benchrest and match ammo!

Man, and I thought hitting those silhouettes in the prone position at 500 yards with iron sights was something.
Question? You know many bad guys that are standing still, Carlos?:)
Good shooting.

LOL, know whatcha mean. I remember those big black circles 500m off. Scared me stiff the first time I saw it.
However, with practice, I managed to be 3rd best shooter in the company.
Amazing what irons can do.
Oh, and as far as the Aimpoint goes, you may want to look into a 1MOA dot if you're gonna be doing 300 yards often.

Yep, it gets very interesting when a man sized target becomes substantially smaller than the front sight post.
300 yARDS?YOU NEED A SCOPE AS IN MAGNIFICATION,TO SHOOT GROUPS.BESIDES IF YOU GUN'S ZEROED IN AT 200 YARDS YOU NEED TO BE HOLDING OVER AS IN HIGHER FOR BULLIT drop.RED DOT and or reg sites
holdover from w200 to 300 yds is about 6" with 55 gr bullets and wind can have a bigger effect
i like the holosight for longer ranges as the 1moa dot doesn't cover up the target as much
good shooting, as a lowly civilian, I think i'd be happy with that level of accuracy. maybe I should just get an AK instead of an AR [ducks and runs;) ]

You took the words right out of my mouth.
My DPMS carbine with Handle mounted Burris 2.5 full field puts the shots in a paperplate at 300 yds al day long.

I've seen a lady put 19 of 20 shots into a group less than 11 inches at 1,000 yards using iron sights...
With a good aperture front I can hold my own against a scoped rifle out to 600 yards...

Yeah, I keep hearing about these people shooting 1" groups at 200 yards unsupported. I must be some sort of crippled, blind-as-a-bat pea brain, with a crappy (factory Colt) gun, because I have yet to duplicate that feat with any ammo in any AR-15.
I consider the AR-15 carbine a 200m weapon. I realize (and Carlos proved) that it has capability beyond that, but in the extremely unlikley event I need to shoot beyond that range - I want something with glass in a caliber that begins with ".3"

in 3-gun match shooting this is common.....8" or 10" plates to 300+ yrds.......I just finished this match and we had 2 stages with 300+ at 10" plates on uneven ground (creek bed's shooting up at them in a canyon and also from a elevated postions....under time... www.rm3g.com and yes i shot iron sights. some had ACOGS' or scopes, but in the class i was shooting i could only use iron sights.
