View Full Version : WHO does the best 30 LPI Front Strap Checkering?
Hi,
I have an original Series 70 Colt that I want to have the front strap checkered, add Novak front & rear sights, and have it re-blued.
In those three areas, who's the best?
Thanks for your time. ;f

Richard Heinie is the best and even though the his wait time is several years I would give him a call. He does do sight work with a fairly quick turn around and maybe could do the checkering without the long wait. I'm not sure about Heinie but some smiths offer machine cut checkering or if you want to up the ante they will do it by hand.

I can recomend EGW (http://www.egw-guns.com) without hesitation. Reasonable turn around time and incredible service.

There are a lot of top name 'smiths that use EGW for their checkering work. Richard Hienie isn't accepting any new work.

Try Colt for the original Royal blue. If you want the Carbona blueing found on the pre-war Colt pistols, try Doug Turnbull Restorations, or Ron's Gun Shop (RGS Restorations).
Personally, I don't like 30 lpi checkering, much preferring the bite of 20 lpi, or possibly 25 as a compromise. I actually like serrations even more... I think they work well and look a lot nicer than checkering... just something for you to consider.

I used SA custom shop for my pimpy Colt I had done years ago. It looks good enough for me. Of course these days I kind of wish I had left it stock.
