View Full Version : Need answers/opinions on SA custom-loaded SS Champion
I am strongly considering buying a SA SS custom-loaded Champion, but have some questions/concerns. Search was of little help. First, are these pistols made in Brazil, and is that a problem regarding QC? Second, does it have a one or two piece barrel, and if yes, should I be wary of the gun? Reliability is most important-- will use it for CCW.
Two piece barrel? Are their handguns with such a barrel?
I am on my second SA and I have never had a single malfunction. Try www.1911forum.com
Glad to know you are happy with your SA 1911s. I've owed one, a G.I. micro-compact, and sold it after I had some extra's put on. After I bought it, I first became aware that some (possibly most) of SA's 1911 barrels are two piece construction (a cost-saving measure according to posts on www.1911forum.com). I called SA and asked about my micro-compact, and they said the 3 inchers were one piece. That begs the question-- are all the 4 and 5 inch barrels they make two piece construction, or only for the lower $$$ models? Doesn't appear to be an issue with most SA 1911 owners, but I thought it was really odd for the gun part most likely to be subjected to extreme pressure to be made from two pieces. Not a metallurgist, physicist, or gunsmith, nor do I play one on TV-- just trying to settle some personal concerns before I spend a considerable sum (for me) on a new gun.
Same deal on the "made in Brazil" question. Made overseas doesn't bother me if the quality is top drawer. That's why I own Toyota and Glock products.
I seldom post, but respect the opinions of those who post frequently here. Not trying to beat a dead horse. I guess I'll call SA and ask about the barrels.

I have an older model loaded champion, and I've had a great experience with it so far. Mine was made in Brazil. Any accuracy issues seem to be user error, as demonstrated by my buddy yesterday who outshot me with my own gun. ;Q
I haven't had it long, but I have 400 rounds through it with no issues. I plan on carrying it as soon as I'm a better shot with it, and as soon as I have a holster. Only downside is the weight, which you could expect from an all steel gun.

Thanks. That's the kind of stuff I'm looking for. If I get a Champion, will go for the all-steel version, regardless of the weight. Most owners have good things to say, from my research on this forum and www.1911forum.com.
