I believe the gun was made around 1918 or so. Do you know what the significance of NRA stamp on the side is?

Once upon a time, in a galaxy far, far away, it was possible for a US citizen to buy US Army small arms through the National Rifle Association and then through the office of the Director of Civilian Marksmanship. If you can believe such a thing. The successor organization the Civilan Marksmanship Program still sells the dregs of Springfield and Garand rifles but pistols have been verboten since passage of the Gun Control Act of 1968.
An early example actually marked NRA is, I understand, quite unusual. If your 1918 vintage gun is in original configuration and in good condition, not refinished or Bubbafied, you have a choice pistol. Take good care of it and do not alter it in any fashion.

Thanks Jim. My father-in-law and I ran across it and puchased it. It is in good shape for being as old as it is. It still has wooden grips. Defintely a keeper.
