View Full Version : Ruger Problem

I recently bought a Ruger MKII 22/45 wtih a 4" barrel to have threaded to replace the POS P22 I have. The pistol only cost a little over $200, but I ended up paying $150 to have the barrel threaded, sights moved back and an end cap fabricated. When I picked it up he informed me that the barrel was off and that it was moving all over the place when he was cutting the barrel. It was apparently not straight when they shipped it from the factory. I wish he had just let me know about the problem before cutting it, but its done with now. I could not notice the barrel at first, but with the added length of the suppressor attached, it is extremely noticable. The threading is fine becuase there was not a baffle strike.
This is extremely frustrating because I already have close to $400 in a $200 pistol and then had to pay another $47 to fed-ex it to Ruger. They'll probably send me another barrel since it appeared to be a factory problem which will mean paying another ~$100 to have the threading done again unless the guy gives me a break at the gunshop. That will be close to $550 I'll have tied up in the $200 pistol when its all said and done with. This is the most frustration I've had with a handgun, including the P22 which it is meant to replace.
Oye!!!! That sux. Why didn't the smith stop working on it when he noticed it was F'ed up?
He should re-do the work for free. It's not like it's rocket science to thread a barrel anyways. He would do it for free, or not get my business again. Not that it's his fault, but damn, cut a guy a break yanno! :)
So the receiver/barrel was sold to you crooked? Never heard of that one before.
I have no doubt Ruger will make it right. If this smith was any kind of a good guy he'd re-do it for free. Although if not, you'll know right away because he'll give you a "well my work was fine, the pistol company is to blame, I can re-do it for the same price (pay me the same again)" If that's the case, I would say you will pass and will convey their sentiments to an online forum consisting of a few thousand members.
So you didn't decide to go with the suppressor manufacturer (who ever that is) for the job? I rembmer that thread a few weeks ago. In this circumstance, since there was no baffel strike, I'm not sure it really would have made a difference.
One thing you might have a hard time with is the fact that the barrel has been threaded. I think Ruger might have something to say since you "altered" their product. I think this voids their warranty. But since this is a very peculiar case, that might not be an issue.
Either way, please keep us informed!!!:)
Good luck to ya bud!

Are you saying that the bore was not concentric with the outside of the barrel? If so that is common with the Rugers.
I think he is saying his barrel was crooked so that it was almost bent at a slight angle and did not fit the original frame properly in the first place...but he'd know better as he is the owner.

I have verified with Ruger's Arizona facility that they will warranty any legally owned Ruger firearm -- including modified Mark IIs.

The barrel was slightly crooked with the frame, just hard to notice since it had a 4" barrel. I guess it is somewhat my fault for not test firing the thing before having it threaded. I had ordered it on the internet and had the same shop that did the transfer to do the smith work so I just left it there for the work to be done after signing the papers. I talked to Ruger today but they said that it had not been checked in yet, they go to the range to be test fired first.

Just got my 22/45 back from Ruger. Cant complain at all, took exactly 2 weeks from the time I sent it out which is great. They repaired the existing barrel so I wont have to go get another one threaded. Everything worked out fine except for the $47 it took to Fed-Ex it to them.
High shipping cost is a PITA...especially when you do it a few times.
But glad to know everything worked out for you!!:)
Any chance we can get some pics of your settup?
Thanks

Nothing fancy. Its a 22/45 with a TAC-65 can on it.
Sorry for the poor quality pic. Its an old camera and I cant justify getting a new camera when theres so many guns that I need. ;)
Very nice ;)
Thanks for the pic.
