View Full Version : Stupid Question about what may happen

I have a Sig 229 w/ both .357 and .40 barrels. It has not happened YET, but I was wondering what would happen if a .357 bullet was fired in the 40 cal barrel, or potentially vice-versa. I AM NOT thinking about, advocating, or otherwise suggesting that someone intentionally do this, but I see the potential for a major ^&%$-up and was wondering if anyone knew the consequenses.

The .40 will probably not chamber in a .357 barrel; if so, no danger there (unless you needed the gun to save your life).
The .357 in the .40 barrel will probably fire, splitting the case at the neck. The bullet will (probably?) exit the barrel, although it will not be spin-stabilized as it could not seal against the rifling in the larger bore. Gas may flow back around the casing into the action or the shooters eyes/face, possible causing injury. Case will not eject when fired.
That's my guess, based on similar cases in the past.
Here's pics of two 9mms fired in a .40, and two .40s fired in a .45:

Those pictures are so nasty. You just convinced me how important a supported barrel is.

I have seen a 357SIG fired in a 40 S&W barrel, and it will work. No guess on where the bullet goes. The action functions and everything. The resulting brass is then call 357STUPID. It seems the shooter read that you can shoot 357SIG in a 40 S&W gun. He just didn't read about the barrel swap that is necessary.
40 S&W will not feed into a 357SIG chamber, so I have not seen that one done.

It also seems that the casing of the 9mm is stronger than the 40 due to the cracks seen on the 40 round. Maybe it's the higher pressures that caused it.
For what it is worth, a 357sig fired in a 40 barrel will chronograph at 610, when the 357sig fired in the right barrel will chronograph at 1310. It turns the sig case into a 40 case. No splits.~rf
WOW! Looses over 1/2 its volocity due to blo by losses!!;Q :(
