G36 Mags won't feed SWC bullets?

Just laid my hands on a MA compliant Glock 36 today (thank you 2ndMarDiv). Went straight from the transaction to the range. Had commercial 230gr FMJ ball as well as reloaded FMJ 200gr SWC to play with.

Ball fed flawlessly, a bit of kick but fun to shoot. The SWC had a 60% failure rate (2 fed, 3 didn't). The problem appears to be the flat front edge of the magazine. It allows ball to "ramp up" over the edge and feed into the chamber. The SWC rounds have the front lip of the bullet lodged squarely against the front edge of the magazine.

Are there other magazines designed to allow SWC in this pistol? Anybody tried filing down the front edge of the mag to let the SWC get past it? Do I give up on SWC for this pistol? That would be too bad because SWC gives nice round holes easy for these older eyes to see.

Also, my reloaded rounds didn't seem to want to feed completely into the chamber. The slide would stop 3/8" or so from being fully into battery. I would just pull back the slide a couple of inches and drop it and the round would be "hammered" into the chamber enough to go into battery and fire. No extraction problems. Am I going to need to change my .45 dies to reload these? I've heard issues where people have been talking about full length resizing dies but if the round goes into my case gauge then it should chamber right?

Haven't had a chance to try my g30 yet on the reloads. Did hand cycle a few reloads through it and they seem to feed without any problems...

A Lee FCD may fix your reload feeding problems. Will a reloaded round drop into the barrel?

I went ahead and added a FCD die to my Dillon press and haven't had a tight case or lube wax booger related FTF since.

I've never owned a G36 so I can't comment on the SWC FTF issue, but if nothing else, buy plated or jacketed RN bullets to load.

I'm a new G36 owner as well and had some problems with some Winchester Super-Match 185gr. SWC's on my first trip to the range. At first they fed fine; but as the carbon built up, the first round from the magazine refused to go fully into the chamber. The rest of the magazine functioned flawlessly. WWB 230gr. FMJ's worked great throughout the session, as did Hornady 200gr. TAP.

Overall, I am VERY pleased with this gun. I found the recoil to be far less than what I expected from a .45 this size and weight. I'm used to .357's in a snubnose and to .44mag's, so this is nothing. I'll be headed back to the range this week and will report results.

The problem appears to be the design of the magazine where SWC is concerned. If I try to hand feed bullets out of the magazine the "ledge" on the bullet hangs up on the flat front lip of the magazine.

I loaded these rounds to an overall length of 1.255 because my S&W 5" won't feed them shorter. Maybe the extra length is causing the bullet to hang up before the magazine tips the bullet up to go to the feed ramp... I'll try building them a little shorter to see if that changes things any.

On my second trip to the range with the G36, I put 100+ rounds of the SWC's through the gun. After 72 rounds, I had one failure to feed and one stovepipe jam. After shooting the SWC's, I put 4 mags of WWB and Hornady TAP without a problem. Goin back out again today.

Last range trip, I got over 100 rounds before I had a failure to feed with the SWC's. Two magazines of WWB 230gr. FMJ functioned perfectly after this.
