Looking to get into the low end, $$$-wise of FA.
What is a good starter FA and what major hoops to jump thru?
Thanks, FH

1. Mac-10 or M-11/9: $3k-4k, bullet hose
2. Reising .45ACP: $4500, old police guns
3. MK-760 or S&W 76: $5k-$5400, some work ok, some don't
4. full-size uzi: can be had for $6000 at the moment, by far the best value of the lot
As for hoops, check the FAQ. In short, you must register the weapon with the ATF, submit to background check, pay $200 transfer tax, and wait a long time for the transfer to be approved. The system is designed to irritate you and dissuade you from purchasing NFA weapons.

Yeah, I gathered as much.
Am in the middle of ATF mess getting my first suppressor so I know the route on that. Seems to be the same for FA.
You do not list AK and variants. Why? I don't know pricing on them or AR variants so I wonder are they higher than what you listed.
OUCH if so. I didn't realize there was such a jump from Assault Rifles (SKS, AR-15, et al) to the FA range.
Thanks for the info and I will check back on FAQ's again to see if I missed anything.
My wife puts up with a lot of my excentricities (sic?) but a $5K+ firearm might just put her over the edge!

Gunbroker always has at least one Mac11 (used) 9mm FA WITH suppressor for around $2500.
Good deal I guess.

At the very low end I think there are really only 2 good choices. Either a Powder Springs M10, or a SWD M11/9
The Powder Springs guns are the original MACs designed by Gordon Ingram and are worth more because of their authenticity and they were better built than other MAC type guns.
The SWD M11/9 is less expensive but by far has the most aftermarket products. It has tons of uppers, slow-fire kits, stocks, grips, and companies are always coming out with more. I see alot of $2,000-2,250 used guns.
The M10 just doesn't have cool stuff like this:

There are very few registered AKs so they go for alot more than AR-15/M16s. Around $13,000-14,000 for a registered AK. As opposed to $8,500-$13,000 for a M16. The cheapest you can get an assault rifle for is $6,000 for a Ruger AC556 or around $7,500 for a FNC.
Of course you could luck out and find someone that needs cash in a hurry, those are just current ballpark dealer prices.

Because they are out of your price range. 11K+ as the poster stated.

More specifically, AKs weren't nearly as common in the US before 1986 as they are now. Since they weren't as common, not as many were converted.
