I read in the manual that Kimber recommends only shooting ball ammo through the pistol, but would like to know if anyone here has safely and reliably used hollow points in their Kimber or other 1911s. Any thoughts are much appreciated.

Kimber has been known to have some "issues" with their external extractor models, but as a general rule yes hollowpoints are safe to use in any modern 1911. How reliable they feed depends on a lot of factors including ammo, magazine being used, and individual pistol. I believe Kimber sticks that phrase about ball ammo in their owners manual because ball is obviously the most reliable load. Do be aware that +p hollowpoints are another matter to consider, but standard pressure loads are fine in any 1911. Good luck.

In all 4 of my Kimbers. 3 with the external extractor. I use 230gr Federal Hydra-shoks for a carry load.

Yeah, I ran about 50 Remington 230gr JHPs (not Golden Sabres) through it the other night, and it ran just as good as with the FMJs. From what I have learned so far, as long as the bullet is not blunt, I should be OK.

Your Kimber may or may nor feed HP ammo correctly as other have said. I haven't had any feeding issues at all with my TLE II. Here's my word of warning for ANY carry ammo. Feed your gun atleast 250 trouble free rounds of the stuff. Keep in mind 1911's are not Glock's. After 100 rounds of your carry ammo in the test, stop and clean. Kimber's are a tight fit. There's a slim chance you would ever need to fire 100 rounds in self defense anyways. Just don't carry ammo with out testing it. Your life may be on the line. You should be able to count on your ammo.

Own several Kimber's. None of them have ever had a problem with HP's. I have used a CDP Pro as a CCW for years.
