Won't be me Douglas, I'm not going!
If I had to pick out of that list: Heck, I dunno.
If Angus shoots one of the IDPA divisions, he probably will walk away with it. But I think he is shooting Open, maybe I'm wrong.
I'm betting on the guy from Japan again for overall win. Daniel Horner for ESP. Robbie for Limited. Todd will be up there. Phil, Travis, Mike Seeklander, all good guys with iron sights, they will be up there.
Wish I was there.....

Me too! Have to support the local 3gun/ Mason-Dixon level I tournament this weekend instead & airfair + hotel at the Challenge are not in this year's budget. Thanks for the input & hope we can both be there next year.
I forgot about the guy from Japan.
For those interested, a past champion at Steel Challenge & (I think) a high finisher at American Handgunner has been a gentleman from Japan who practices all year using only an air-soft training gun since civilians are banned from owning firearms or real BB guns in Japan. I understand he comes to the US several weeks in advance to familiarize himself with real firearms again and then often wins the match!

Douglas

If "that guy from Japan" keeps winning, we might want to consider learning his name. Just a thought. ;f

Unofficially sounding like:
Limited:
1st - Todd Jarrett
2nd - Rob Leatham (83.00)
3rd - Phil Strader (83.02)
It is Phil's first time at the Steel Challenge.

Heres a post from Michael Bane this morning from the bane blog, http://michaelbane.blogspot.com/. He is at the steel challenge right now. Heres what he says:
Am at the Steel Challenge is lovely metropolitan Piru, CA. This year, The Outdoor Channel and SIGARMS ponied up $20,000 to any shooter who can beat 72 seconds time for the overall match today. Not surprisingly, everybody who's ever held a racegun is here.
First, from yesterday's Limited match, all day long it looked like a duel between TGO, Rob Leatham, and revolvermeister Jerry Miculek. But sneaky old Todd Jarrett crept up and snatched the Limited title at the end of the day, following what amounts to a superhuman run on Five To Go. Todd's score of roughly 81 seconds is one of the top three or four Limited scores ever shot. Thne big surprise was Capital Police trainer Phil Strader, not even shooting on the Super Squad, who came really really close to grabbing the whole thing.
There's all sorts of handicapping going on. Rob Leatham, who actually shot a 72-second match on a different course, says nobody is going to grab the dough. Ditto for match co-owner Mike Dalton. Todd thinks I'm going to have to present the check. Flash shooter J.J. Racaza's already got the money spent.
Me, I thik there's three shooters who can have a big payday today:
• J.J.
• K.C. Esuebio (which I misspelled!)
• Doug Koenig
I'll let you know tonight!

Woo-hoo! Todd Jarrett! I'm glad he won! It's been too long since he's had a big win, I think. Too many people count him out when they are handicapping big matches, but it's clearly a mistake to do so! Woo-hoo!
BTW ... in our local steel match today, I got my a** handed to me ... by me! I shot limited and open, both with my Kimber .45. I had much better times on my first runs (Lim) for some reason. I missed ... a LOT.

" Thne big surprise was Capital Police trainer Phil Strader, not even shooting on the Super Squad, who came really really close to grabbing the whole thing."
This should not be a surprise to anyone. At the recent World Shoot/World Pistol shooting championships, Phil lead the entire world, best of the best, etc. for the first several days until being forced to switch to borrowed ammo which did not go off in his gun (he had to borrow parts from class-act Rob Leatham just to finish the match). And speaking of Leatham, also known as: "The Great One" he has won the U.S. Nationals for years but in 2003, Phil had him beat on the final day going into the very last stage of the 300+ round match; Phil's miss on his very last stage of the match cost Phil the win over Rob/TGO. Still, second place against TGO is an amazing accomplishment and yet Phil remains a virtual unknown compared to many other top shooters. If Rob deserves the title "The Great One" (and he does deserve it 100%) then I think Phil could be called: The Great (unappreciated) one".
Late word from the match is that Sakai may have DQ'd (I hate it whenever anyone DQs but I feel especially bad for Tatsuya having travelled so far for this once a year event). As for people not remembering his name, what can we expect if people can't even remember Phil's accomplishments? Sakai should move out of Japan, switch to more mainstream/popular sports like IPSC & win some more of the big title matches in order to earn greater name recognition.
Regards,
D.C. Johnson
Big Hugs to Phil - He is so pretty - just ask him :)
I agree it should not come as a surprise. :soap:

Here is the results from Michael Bane
And the Winner Is............
Max Michel of the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, in what has to be the most stunningly dramatic shooting match ever!
His time?
73.59 (unofficial!).
That's right...close, but no cigar.
It all came down to the last stage, the Speed Option, with J.J. Racaza solidly ahead, Doug Koenig roughly a couple of seconds behind and nobody else really in the running. Up until that point, J.J. had been having the match of his life...all he needed to do was cruise for the match and the $25,000. Doug had (for him...not us mere mortals) a so-so series of runs, but realistically, it was J.J.'s match to lose. We figured him at 71 seconds and change, based on what he's done oon the stage in the past.
The Speed Option ate him alive.
Max Michel, with no idea that he was even in contention, stepped up the the line and blistered the stage. You could hear the pocket calculators whirring, then Todd Jarrett, a close friend of Max's, stepped foward and said, "Congratulations, dude!"
Max said, "For what?"
BTW, Max is from New Orleans, and his family lost everything...including the gifts for his wife's baby shower! More on this later.
It's posted now.
