After eight months work... (http://www.sniperworld.com/glock)

Any comments?

Site is being rearranged and the above link no longer works. In case the URL changes again I recommend just to go to the frontpage and use the navigation.

awesome, I wish there was a way to save it.

Is it my comp or does the gun cycle sort of slowly? Also maybe add a way to turn the sound off? (constructive criticism:))

Is it my comp or does the gun cycle sort of slowly?
The animation tends to choke up non-high end systems. Eventhough the filesize is minimal it takes quite a lot of computing power.

awesome, I wish there was a way to save it.
pleas don't... I people rip it from the site, all the work is wasted and it will be of no help for keeping up the site.

Outsanding job! It does a really good job of showing how the process works inside the Glock and the animation is pretty cool!

That is some exceptional work, unlike anything I've ever seen, appreciate the hard work that takes, especially with something that technical.

That is truly incredible and I give you lots of credit....Copyright it or something and SELL it to glock...like someone said, they'd be stupid not to take it for their website.

Thanks!! It's great. I can't imagine all of the work it must have taken. You are indeed a patient man.

I had a problem with Part # 34 (Locking Block Pin) highlighting from the Parts List. I'm using XPS2, Flash 7,0,19,0 and Firefox 1.06. Everything else worked well.

I think it would add to usability if a person could click on the word "Split", "Transparent", et. seq. and have the entire list change to that choice.

Very nice work and again, thanks.

I asked Glock Austria if they were interested. They weren't.
They said Glock has a policy that they don't use/ buy marketing material from third parties.

Team Glock is strongly affiliated with Glock USA so I don't think they will be interested either. Besides, they don't seem to have any e-mail contact info on their site anyway.

hokieglock

just for debugging purposes. i went back and initially made everything transparent. saw the bullet go through the barrel. then i selected only the slide and barrel transparent, saw the bullet, then at some point i configured it to were the slide and barrel were only transparent and bullet dissapeared. prob. seems to be when slide and barrel are selected transparent initially or in follow on selections. i think i should get some kind of royalties. j/k;f ;f ;f

Agreed. But the more ammo it shows the slower the animation becomes. Maybe he only has that one mag left that has two rounds in it... I mean two is better than one right :)

Yep, it's all vector graphics so you can make it as big as you like. Thats also the reason why the filesize is only 100 kb.

No. The sample inside the link is of a 1911 style pistol, but the same principle applies to Glocks. The Bullet leaves the barrel before the slide really starts to move.

I can only agree with the compliments above!
One question though: in your grapic when firing the Glock, the spring cups hit the front of the firing pin channel after which the striker moves forward against the firing pin spring pressure, finally reaching the primer thus firing the round. Doesn't in reality the striker reach the primer before the springcups slam into the front of the firing pin channel?
Not trying to be a b****, just wondering.

Juho
11-05-2005, 08:05
In my understanding no, because the firing pin sping cups "drive" the firing pin forward. Corret me if I'm wrong...

Calvin1972
11-05-2005, 10:00
I agree with the part about the spring cups driving the striker, but that was not what I meant; When you look closely at the computersimulation you made: when the trigger is pulled backwards and the end of the triggerbar moves downward, the striker is released. The firing pin spring now pushes the striker forward by pushing against the spring cups, which are connected to the striker itself; so far no complaints here, but now comes the part where I think your graphics are wrong: when the striker is almost at its foremost position, you picture the springcups hitting the front end of the firing pin channel (before the striker tip reaches the primer),and after the spring cups stop moving forward, the striker does move forward about a quarter of an inch, hitting the primer and setting off the round. This I think is not correct; in reality the tip of the striker or firing pin reaches the primer before the springcups hit the front of the firing pin channel.
Apart from this detail, I think your graphics are great and am using the transparant blue one as the front of my glock-notes,
Regards,
Calvin.

Juho
11-05-2005, 11:29
Ok, I see what you mean. Does anybody KNOW who is right, I thought I was but I'm not sure anymore.

The firing pin does have "free play" when the firing pin cups are at the forward position. When you press down the firing pin safety (on a removed slide) you can move the firing pin forward and back without any spring tension.

In other words when you pull the striker back and release it slowly (firing pin pressed down) with your fingers you can feel that the firing pin spring cups contact the slide first before the firing pin protrudes from the firing pin hole on the slide. This, in my opinion, indicates that the animation is correct.;Q Anybody?

Calvin1972
11-06-2005, 01:28
You're starting to make me doubt aswell... I don't think many people take the time to scroll all the way down this thread anymore, but I'll try to work it out on a glock. Will get back to you on this.

That explains a lot!

Looks like a lot of measuring of parts to create each object in flash. Did you have images of each part or did you do all the dimensions/drawings by hand?

Any plans to make an interface that allows us to slow and speed up the animation?

I think that would be crucial for your market (training)

Thanks again,
-Mathew

Juho
11-16-2005, 01:26
Everythng has to measured and drawn by hand. And that takes A LOT of time. In fact thats whre most of the time is spent. Once the parts are done, the animation is not so time consuming.

The Glock 17 took 8 months when I worked on it on the evenings and weekends and it only had 33 parts. I started an ar-15 project a while ago and the amount of work seems overwhelming to an extent that I have stopped that project for a while. It just doesn't seem worth the effort when there is a good chance I will just end up giving it away for free (just like the Glock version).

I never thaught about speeding up / slowing down the animation, I'll have to look into that.

Mathew
11-17-2005, 08:13
I imagine that speed control/step by step animation would not be that hard to do and would totally rule.

Thanks,
-Mathew

Juho
11-25-2005, 01:01
Well, actually I'm kind of selling it. I have a notice on the page that says that I will send the standalone .exe version to anyone who donates more than $5.

the reason for this is that we need to buy more bandwith badly, in fact it seems that the site will have to closed for a few days because at the current rate the bandwith limit will be exeeded before the end of the month. We will be back and running on the 1st of Dec. in any case but thats how things are now.

Would you consider marketing this as a training resource to police departments that issue Glocks? This is a tremendous training aid and you should be very proud of this accomplishment. Our department uses lap top computers for each recruit during training and if we could put this on each one prior to beginning our firearms courses it would be very beneficial.

Juho,

Excellent work thank you for time and effort you put into this.

I would send example to other firearm companies to see if they are interested in your work.

Here is a link that lists the IP ranges for France (http://mcafee.servegame.com/download/country.php?list=FR&limit=10000&page=1)

While it would be a "kludge" to block a whole country outright, looking at your htaccess logs (or NetBSD version of htaccess if different) may help you to find a way to prevent people/Websites from ripping off your work.

I am in no place able to recommend changes since I don’t have the knowledge on what would be needed; however one quick thought....

Instead of two bullets in the mag, have one in the chamber and one in the mag.

Fire the first round off and show the action of the handgun.

Now you are left with an empty mag and a single round in chamber...

Fire the last round off and show how the slide "locks back".

Juho
02-07-2006, 00:59
I haven't put more than two rounds in the mag because it really slowed down the animation. It sounds unbelievable considering todays computers, but there is something about gradient colours that really suck up computing power. Also because the 9mm is a slightly tapered round it seemed really difficult to do. I tried... the result was just a big mess.

Each individual cartridge must be animated separately and their position & angle is slighly changed every time time a round is extracted from the magazine.

The slide locking back is a good idea, also the trigger should not return forward as fast as it does now. If the trigger should stay back longer so it would be easier to demonstrate the trigger reset point. I will be returning to the Glock animation and making some improvents once I get the ar-15 and some other projects out of the way.

Fantastic, once again.

One thing I noticed you might want to look at:

When you select porting its hard to see. Everything else is contrasted very well, except the porting. If you were not familiar with porting it might get missed.

The feature I like the best is the way when you select different sections like the barrel, grip safety, sights etc keep clicking and you get different types of those items.

It's pretty accurate. The only real glitch I see is that they have the striker spring compressing while the trigger is resetting.

The striker spring is a good bit stiffer than the trigger spring, the trigger resets fully before there is any measurable/detectable compression on the striker spring.
