I am looking to pick up a 1911 style pistol to carry in the car, any ideas?
More questions than ideas at this point. Are you interested in a full-size, mid-size or ultracompact? Do you prefer a steel frame or is aluminum OK? Need an ambi safety? Night sights? You get the idea. A little more info from you might help us offer advice. Let us know. ;)

If it's just for the car, a Rock Island .45 should do nicely. Right around $300.

For car, I would get a Kimber TLE/RL II with light rail and M3 lights, so you can use it at night as well. It is a modified (with accessory rail) tactical pistol same as the ones used by LAPD SWAT.
By the way, check with your state and local laws. Most of the laws do not allow you to "carry" a loaded gun in your car. A CCW permit only allows you carry a loaded weapon on your PERSON not in your car. Please understand your local regulation before "carry" a loaded gun in your car.

+1...
For a car weapon, don't pay for something you can't afford to have stolen IMO. I had purchased a Norinco 1911 for this exact same application. I had to replace it with a G20 because I started customizing/upgrading the rinco right out of truck gun duties. Now I can't replace the rinco, but a G20 is available everywhere.
Something to think about.

I keep an HK USP Compact 9mm in the car. I can shoot it well with one hand and it is not too expensive (traded for a used one).
