Thought about giving this a shot. I have the chance to get some rounds down range and these are on the table. I may think about converting to the Hornady line (again) if they are as accurate as I have been told. What are you opinion on them???
They are accurate from my experience, but have a poor Hollow Point design. Good weight on the load though.

YMMV, but I cycled through several boxes of the 147 xtp's. GIANT flame, huge recoil, and quite possibly the loudest round I have ever fired from my P229. (Even compared to Georgia Arms Canned Heat)
Not good to be blind AND deaf after shooting at a goblin in your house at 2am... I don't recommend Hornady XTP's at all.
(P.S. Doubletap is making a 147 in the VERY near future... www.doubletapammo.com )

Another thumbs down here..
They may be accurate but have more recoil than one would expect, and the hollow points have major jacket separation and fragmentation issues.

This load has consistently been the most accurate out of my carry 31. I will admit, however, there is more muzzle blast associated with this load. As for it being louder than other loads I honestly couldn't say. I've alway had plugs in my ears when shooting, and can't say whether I feel the Hornady's are any louder than other 125gr. loads based on my experience. I have learned to manage the recoil and honestly have no concerns with the "GIANT"(maybe you have more sensitive eyes than I do Mister Joshua, love your user name by the way) flame as this won't be my first choice in a home defense situation anyway. That honor goes to my M3 loaded with TAP 00 buck. If I am lucky enough to survive an armed encounter with an intruder, or otherwise, then whatever damage that may have been done to my hearing, and or eyesight, during this encounter will certainly be placed in a much different perspective. I will be eager to try the new 147's from DT when they come out. If they are in same range accuracy wise with the Hornady offering I will switch, because I like the Gold Dot bullet better than the XTP. I would be willing to bet, however, the recoil will be about the same between the two. Just my two cents, or three, or four.:) ;c

NICE!!!
I had much much much fun at the range. I like the 147 grainers. They had a lot less flip than what I thought there would be. I also thought there would be more push because it's heavier. It shot well out of all of the Glocks. (The 33 is a tac driver!!!) Just my .02
Same here, one of the most accurate load that I ever tried in a 357sig offering. And to be honest it was the 1st load that I ever tried in a 357sig many years back.
As far as the going blind comment;
Do you get blinded if you flash a powerfull flashlight at night at somebody else? yes/no ?
Will that's what you are doing when you shoot a bright muzzle flash load, the person on the receiving end of the bbl , is going to get blind and not you.
as far as the jacket seperation & fragmentation comment, the 147gr XTP-HP has show about the same as most other loads and with no seperation or fragmentation;
vel energy penetration and expansion
Hornady 147 gr. XTP-HP 1210 478 16.2 .58

do a comparison and then re advise your seperation & frag myth.

Wow, not sure how to even start with this.
Start where ever you must. I would suggest you take a box or 2 and run it thru a night course and then get back with us if you are blinded. The same thing you will get is the what a flash does and you being a photographer.
If you had a ported gun, then "maybe".
Don't take my work for it but do a search or talk to a vietnam vet or somebody that actuall has fired weapons at night and reported if they where blinded from being behind the muzzle. ;Q

I really didn't notice much "flash" with the Hornadys. It was low light not too bad though.
And being a former infantry guy I have fired many many rounds at night. The worst weapon to fire at night is (my opinion) the SAW.

Also... I have noticed case seperation in all types and brands of ammunition that I have fired. Not saying that every round fired seperated from the case but I think it happens with ammo. Kinda like the military allows 1 dud for every 100 dropped or fired.
noway-
I've fired guns at night and the muzzle flash does affect your vision, hell, a lit cigarette affects your nightvision.
My point was, comparing muzzle flash to a flashlight doesn't make any sense. Muzzle flash is more like a torch or a lantern, it's omni-directional.

The XTP and jacket/core separation/fragmentation issues? Uhm, you sure about that and the XTP?

I haven't used the factory loaded 147gr XTP's but I reload them for myself at @1250fps. I know it's not scientific testing but in water jugs the recovered bullet was 118grns if IIRC with a nice expansion and splat factor on the jugs. So it does lose almost 30grns in the 4 jusgs it went through. I haven't noticed that the 147grn loads recoil more than the 125's, in fact I think it's a bit less??

Well I wouldn't say poor. I believe the slower controlled expansion that the XTP's offer is more suited for hunting than SD, but yeah I prefer the Gold Dot. PGH~
