View Full Version : Info on Win Ranger SF 100gr frangible ammo
I recent purchased a box of Winchester Ranger Frangible SF ammo (100 gr)and I interested in hearing about any info on suitability for defense use where overpenetration may be an issue .

I bought 4 boxes a while back, the shop was closing it out, and I picked it up for $13.00 per 50 rounds. It has a lighter recoil then the 125 grain Federal and Rem UMC. I shot a wet phonebook to see what would happen, and it penetrated fairly deep, but busted up and didn't go beyond the phone book. I think it would be decent for self defense where over penetration would be an issue.
Exactlywhat I was hoping for since I tend to visit my son who lives in the most ghettoe part of Tacoma and overpenetration is definitely an issue .

Where exactly do you see overpenetration being an issue?
Crappy inner city habi-trail housing with only 1/2 in sheet rock between apartments . My son already had one round go through an outside into the apartment below and up through the floor of his upstairs apartment and out the roof . He really needs to move , lets just say I call it a 2 spare mag neighborhood .

Frangible ammunition is designed for range use. It helps cut down on backstop wear and tear. Most frangible ammunition is labeled "not for self defense use" or "not for law enforcement use". They label it like this for a reason. I would not use frangible for SD. If you want less penetration a different caliber is in order. I would suggest a .45acp in the 180gr. weight range.

How about 115 grain Corbons? I'm trying some out next week while waiting for the new DT stuff.
Aready using Corbon 115gr , my main interest is because the Sinter/frangible ammo is already seeing use in Iraq by contracted protection forces .

...and how many of those guys have been captured and beheaded already? Stick to a light JHP or switch calibers, there is no sense in putting yourself in a position that is not YOUR best interest. Your saftey needs to come first and the odds of 100% penetration through a body, then again through a wall, and finally striking a bystandard, is very minimal at best.
Umm actually none , I was speaking of contracted protection forces not contract reconstruction workers .
